Top 2028 linebacker Jay Schell recruitment remains wide open as it starts to heat up. The Top-150 linebacker is in touch with several top-programs around the country. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound linebacker has taken unofficial visits to Tennessee, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, and Virginia Tech.
Schell chatted with CanesInSight about his recruitment with Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes among other teams pursuing him. He hails from Rabun Gap, Georgia, playing high school football for Rabun Gap-Nacoochee. This past season with the Eagles, he led them to a record of 7-5 and 2-0 in region play. He recorded 77 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks.
He received an offer from the Hurricanes coaching staff during the month of May. He told CIS that he hopes to visit this upcoming fall for a gameday visit: "Miami is definitely a school I’m interested in," stated Schell. "I hope I can get to a game this fall."
There are currently over a dozen schools pursuing him the hardest: Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Clemson, Michigan, Oregon, Indiana, Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, NC State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Louisville. Even though, Miami are still new to his options, he still has the Hurricanes as a top school in his recruitment.
"[Miami is in my] Top 10, which is really no different than any of the other schools," he added. "3-4 [schools] are recruiting me harder than the others but it is still really early. I want to see how the season plays out this fall."
According to the 247Sports Composite Recruiting Rankings, he is currently viewed as a four-star prospect. He ranks as the No. 137 overall player, No. 10 linebacker, and No. 18 player out of the Peach State. He holds an additional 46 offers from Power 5 programs.
He spoke about his recruitment timeline: "I will probably name a top 10 this fall and really start narrowing things down next January and into the spring."
Schell believes that he would fit well in the defensive scheme of Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman.
"I really feel like Miami would be a great fit because of my versatility to play multiple backer positions on and off the ball. I’m good in coverage and really look to show off my pash rush skills this fall."
"Miami is a blue-blood program with a history of producing great LB’s like Ray Lewis and Dan Morgan, and so many others. They had an awesome season last year showing that they are a national championship contender. The weather is awesome in Miami and they will play for championships year in and year out," stated Schell.
