Nobody made a bigger leap in 2023 than WR Jacolby George. After totaling 313 yards and 1 TD through his first two years at Miami, George exploded for 864 yards and 8 TDs in 2023. He hopes to make another jump this year and spoke to the CanesInSight Podcast about his development, Cam Ward and more:
On why he improved last year: Everything came together with me because of my receiver coach coach, KB (Kevin Beard). He helped me understand how to move on after you fail. Just because you fail once doesn’t mean you have to fail again. Me failing at practice helped me doing what I had to do on the field in the games. It helped me understand what I did wrong, what I need to do and what I can do to make it better for next time. My receiver coach put that in my head: “You have to fail to win.”
On his athletic background: It pretty much was always football. I tried basketball once, but it was back to football. I started playing football when I was five and it's just been football ever since.
On his viral one-handed catches in high school: In 7on7, I feel like it's more entertainment. So you could do whatever freely. In college, you can’t try to do the one hand and you drop it. You’ve got to catch it.
On Cam Ward: Cam came in ready. He came in and communicated with the receivers. After the first practice, we were watching film already. Him just being him is gonna help us a lot.
On signing with the Canes out of high school: I chose Miami because I wanted to stay home. I wanted to be close to my family so they could watch my games, come to my practice every day and watch me grow as a person and as a football player. I feel like anybody else that's from Miami or Broward should do the same.
On his big game against FSU (153 yards and 2 TDs): That game was kind of personal. I didn't like that we got blown out the year before. It was like, “I can’t go out like that again.” We’ve got to give our all. And that's what I did.
On his favorite thing about playing football: Being able to enjoy winning with my team.
On his pre-game music: FCG Heem- Lil Boosie.
On what he does in his free time: I play video games. Warzone and Madden. I don't stream but I'm gonna start soon.
On his relationship with Canes Connection: They helped me a lot. They helped me with [financial literacy]. They helped me with public speaking. They helped teach me how to interact with other people.
On what he wants to pursue when football is over: I want to be a coach.
