How many NFL Draft picks should we be producing?

How many NFL Draft picks should we be producing?

This year’s draft was pretty depressing as a Canes fan. It’s been getting worse for two decades and bottoming out lately. During the draft, Alonzo Highsmith posted on Twitter that a playoff-caliber team needs 5-7 draft picks a year. That gave me an idea for a study.

I went back and looked at every national championship from 2013 (FSU) to 2020 (Alabama). I avoided more recent years because some of those classes still have key players in college.

For each champion, I looked at a three-year snapshot of their 2nd-4th year players. In other words, for 2020 Alabama, I looked at the 2017, 2018, 2019 classes. The three categories were: (1) average total amount of NFL Draft picks per class; (2) percentage of those players picked on Days 1 and 2; and (3) total amount of first rounders over the three-year snapshot.

At the end, I also looked at the three last Miami classes in this time frame (Richt’s last two classes, plus Manny’s first class) as a comparison. Here are the results:

The champions signed an average of 7.666 NFL Draft picks per class. 2016 Clemson with Deshaun Watson was the lowest with a 5.666 average. 2015 Alabama was the highest with 9.333.

Of those NFL Draft picks, 66.4% of them were picked on Day 1-2. The 2019 LSU Tigers were the most bottom-heavy team (only 56% being Day 1-2), while 2014 Ohio State and 2020 Alabama were loaded up top 77%.

The teams produced an average of 6.75 first rounders total over the three-year period. That’s a little over two first rounders in every class. The low team was the 2013 Noles with 4. The high team was 2020 Alabama with 11 (including 8 in an insane 2017 class).

Miami was nowhere close. In their snapshot (2017-2019) they had an average of 2.333 draft picks per class, with only 1 of those as a Day 1-2 pick.

One thing to watch going forward- do the numbers change with the Portal? I can see a scenario where the NFL numbers remain steady but the makeup becomes different (a Portal NFL kid counts the same as a HS kid). For this study, I didn't include transfers.

Good analysis. Without even opening up the thread, my guess was at 6 per year. And I know that we have been way below that average for a while.

Compare vs. Blue Chip Ratio, I went back to 2017:

Miami made the cut in 2019, 21, 22 23
Bama and OSU were 1-2 in 17, 18, 19, 22, and 23
They were 1 and 3 with UGA 2 in 20 and 21

A ton of highly regarded talent on both squads. Miami gets a five-star and they don't do jack chit: Williams, Taylor, Lingard. Chad Thomas was saved by Manny re draft status but was done in 2 years.

Part of the issue is acquisition (getting blue chips but 20% less than OSU, Bama, UGA) and part is development. The NFL doesn't think highly of what Miami puts into the NFL

Great breakdown. Lots of research there. You need to start training chatGPT to do it for you

Sheesh we got a long way to go, portal/nil/ extended playoffs can help us tho

This is what I've been saying for years - you can't compare just overall numbers, it's where they got drafted.

Example - 2024 NFL Draft:

Miami - 4 picks - 3rd & 3 7ths
Ohio St - 4 picks - 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th

The value of the Ohio St guys are 20x more than the Miami guys - even though it's the same amount of players drafted.

I just saw a post that we now have 50 straight yrs of a player drafted. At least that is an accomplishment

Spent some time around Eli Drinkwitz before I stopped pursuing jobs in college football. The "magic number" when looking at his own roster and scouting other teams was 25 draft picks. Are there 25 guys on the roster currently that will get drafted in the future? Doesn't mean they're all at that level in that year as some are freshman, some are redshirting, some may currently be injured, some will transfer in and others will transfer out, etc. Guess that's in line working out to 5-6 per year.

25 draft picks total and then at least 12 guys (half of your starters including punter and kicker) that will either be drafted or sign somewhere as an UDFA in the next draft. For reference, Miami had 4 draft picks and then 6 guys that signed UDFA deals so we didn't meet that measure. Doubt there were 25 future draft picks on our 2023 roster either. The 12 measure basically points to quality veteran depth. The 25 total points to overall talent on your team.

It's not just Draft Picks - it's HIGH Draft Picks.

I made this point after Georgia's 2021 NC - Day 1&2 Talent is the National Championship Recipe

You need 5 minimum Day 1 & 2 draft picks at the 8 positions - QB, RB, WR, OL, TE, DL, LB, DB

AFTER 2021 SEASON:

Here's how many Day 1 & 2 picks each NC team has had at their 8 Position Groups:

1642782198302.png

To win a NC, you need either:

1) NFL Rounds 1-3 talent in AT LEAST 5 of your 8 positions
2) Superman as your QB (Cam Newton in 2010)

UPDATE AFTER 2023 SEASON:

2021 Georgia - 7
2022 Georgia - 6
2023 Michigan - 7

What I'd love to see is an analysis of where our HS commits have been drafted versus their high school recruiting rankings. Going off memory, the number of top 200 recruits we've had the last decade that went late Day 3 or UDFA (or worse) seems significant.
