Allegedly DT's don't like the gap control techniques in Dorito's system - Supposedly! However, every system requires all gaps to be covered in order to have a sound defense - in the box.
Zone blitzes and stunts can be considered gambles as it relates gap protection, but it sometimes takes exotic calls to crack (confuse) a good offensive line. Dorito has implemented such calls in the past, but not always against certain teams... When we play the USF's of the world, we see more chancess being taken, but for whatever reason, we're pretty vanilla against stiffer competetion.
When you bring blitzes with a LB or a drop-down Safety, it opens up opportunities for the DT's to get some freebie Sacks, and/or 1 on 1 situations, which increases their chances of having good numbers, which turns the heads of scouts.
Say what you want, but when a scout pulls a report, he's less likely to skip down to a guy with 8 sacks in a 4 year career, compared to a guy with 18-20 sacks in 4 years from the DT position. The recruiters are pushing this point to the elite DT prospects.
I don't think the calls to be successful are missing from "the playbook." I think it's "the guts" to pull the trigger on the exotic calls that's missing!
We have what it takes to be this kind of defense, with the right calls:
