Good post... especially about the lack of emphasis on passing game. One could count on 1-2 hands how many programs besides UM used their backs, TEs and WRs in the passing game and, you're right, Elway was a freak. He also some pretty good coaches who later worked in the NFL, including Rod...

With some exceptions, S&C was really in it's infancy at most programs. You're talking about an era where a few years prior to the 80s most of the players in the NFL had full-time jobs in the offseason. At the college level the players who were really serious about S&C often worked put in...

I think Green's first game in college was against ND where he starred from the get_go. The late 1970s through 1980 had some stud players. Four players inducted into NFL HOF including Marino, Jimbo Covert, Russ Grimm and Ricky Jackson. Additionally, Green, Bill Maas, Randy McMillan, Carlton...

I had a buddy who played at a school in Virginia during early 1980s and he mentioned the alleged drug use back then (via teammates from Pa). Then again, it was the early eighties so drug use was everywhere, including roids, which Pitt had a reputation with regards to usage. Also, Pitt had a lot...

Nice work, Sir. Eason was coached up Mike White who I believed had come from Cal-Berkley and, of course, I should have mentioned Jim Sweeney at Fresno State who ran the one-back offense (Erickson was part of Sweeney's coaching tree).

When you have the opportunity, go to YouTube and have a look at the offenses they were running in college football back in the 1970s, even up to late 1980s. People mock Mario's BroBall offenses, but if you take a look at what passed for offense in those days. Some teams were the exceptions, most...

Well, I'm glad he ran into the back of a law firm to get him some compensation for that POS turf that shredded his knee.

I think Nessler has that effect on all games he calls, especially if the team he's covering is playing good ball.

Injured at VT if I recalled correctly. I think it was shoulder related.

Fair point regarding recruiting aspect and with Taylor he had experience coaching high school ball so at least he had some experience working and recruiting for STA.

I miss Keith Jackson. Heck, I miss Ron Franklin as well. The old southern play-by-play guys were the best at doing college football and MLB. Exceptions being Tim Brando and that fat slob who does ACC games.

Good coach yet he's been fired more than an old Navy cannon. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Orphey makes sense as he works for Schiano and previously with Saban. Two coaches Mario has worked for in the past. Cooper worked at UM before under Golden. His dad played at Killian (Class of '80) and was one of those who signed state LOI with UM but eventually signed with Michigan. Cooper...

That was fun to watch. Watching Jim Kelly carving StatePenn's defense...so that's how a QB is supposed to look? Can you imagine playing in a 21st century offense? The WRs especially Joiner and Walker tore up those DBs. There was a key play missed in that video where Tim Flanagan stuffed PSU on...

Lots of history in soFla football circles going back even before we were born. Young'uns think local sports culture started during Wade County and his NBA team that played in downtown Miami. It is much deeper than this going back to hs football, including black schools during segregation...

Jack Fernandez played in a very talented Hialeah Optimist program which included Miles, Jim Llinas (HML,UM), Mike McDonald (HML,Mississippi State), Tony Arias (MLB), Dale Dorminey (HialeahHS,UF) and, not 100 percent sure, Joe McCall who played Miami Jackson and later Pitt with Marino and...

Recruited to run the Veer offense under Joe Brodsky who was hired by Saban. But that kinda changed when Schnellenberger took over.
