X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

I mentioned in the podcast that’s the biggest problem was depth. I think we’re either thin or young a certain positions. It’s the biggest problem I see on a game to game basis. On a bigger scale, obviously anyone could benefit from elite defensive linemen. That’s what separates the top handful...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

I need to look at the film. But we dropped 8 a good amount in that game. I suppose the argument could be made that you can spot drop in max coverage and be effective. Assuming you’re running 3 deep defenders, the 5 underneath can use space to cover since the middle hole guy won’t need to run...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

This is a fun topic. I need to watch more film to develop better opinions. Off the top of my head, I can see the following from our 2023 commits: Boundary Safety: - Z. Patterson - I. Thomas Field Safety (Star): - Z. Patterson (depending on his coverage abilities) Boundary End: - M...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

The concept is relative athleticism. You’re picking the more athletic DE to play in coverage sometimes to the condensed boundary, like an outside linebacker. The bigger, more traditional DEs will always play their DE role. You’re picking the larger, more physical “box” Safety to play deep...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

I coached with my middle fingers extended, so I guess it all connects.

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

Nowadays I'm just a lowly fan and occasional internet troll. Initially I was doing these during law school classes after I stopped coaching. Found CiS as a way to scratch the itch. AG was the coach back then--you know what happened next. I like Guidry a lot, so I guess he inspired me to come...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

I would say you need both--but definitely the secondary needs to be adaptive as ever. I will make a post about this one day, but something as simple as alignment to the formation is something that takes time to perfect. They need to understand spacing and be in position to do their job--an...

Instant depth. Thank god we got #22 at least.

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

This is why James Williams got a bad rap initially. An 18 year old kid playing safety is very far from ideal. Then he had the shoulder thing. Turn on a tape of a young Ed Reed. He was getting torched left and right. When I coached, I couldn’t do **** if I had inexperienced or dumb safeties. I...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

Biggest problem is by far is depth. We’re already seeing the depth problems right now at safety and DL. Aside from that, I would like to see some more elite bodies on the DL, which will always be a struggle. Those guys don’t grow on trees. Do we have another Kiko on the roster? I don’t think...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

    1. Fire zone lends itself to this. Everyone knows the flats are empty. You need to pick your battles. You’re down a player, so you need to reroute the seams and take away the deeper stuff. It’s if you can’t fool the QB with the coverage rotation and you can’t get pressure, you’re probably giving...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

Man a whole thread can be made about robber coverage. I love it. Incredible against the run since it places your FS as a primary run defender aligning only 8ish yards off the ball. It was used primarily against 2 backs for a long time but was adapted to 1 back. No one ever blocks the FS. Think...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

You would drill shifts and motions. Usually before practice you walk through, then during practice you rep it at full speed. It is always part of the game. In my experience, this system is not more complicated than any others. Your safetys need top be smart, experienced and well coached. It's...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

I presume you're talking about a 1 back 2x2 look outside zone to the boundary. It depends on the coverage to determine who would be the primary D gap defender--it's probably the weak safety. Here is a quarters shell against double flanker (2x2 with 2 te). TCU plays this with a 6 technique...

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

Probably lack of experience in the DE's and bad luck. Playing coverage doesn't come naturally to people a lot of the time--especially DE's. In the NFL, those guys have a ton more time to practice and you see them do a much better job against better competition.

X's and O's Guidry's Multiple Nickel Defense: The Basics

Foreword: Some of you know me from many, many years back where I would create the occasional instructional post on defensive football. I don't want to go on too much about my resume, but I can say I have some good coaching or playing experience with the following systems: Gary Patterson 425; Bud...
