Takeaways:

Let's start with the defense this week. Boys and girls, we got some real ones on that side. The final statistics really don't tell the full story, although they were still all quite good. But FSU opened the game with a 10-play, 70 yard drive that ended in a field goal. Absolute win by the defense to bow up and force the 3, however they did average 7 yards per play on that drive. The field goal was kicked with 10:02 to go in the first quarter. So, 5 minutes into the game.

For the next 7 drives of the game, which lasted until 12:41 to go in the 4th quarter, so basically 3 FULL quarters of football, this is what FSU did:

38 offensive plays
146 offensive yards
3.84 yards per play (would equate to the worst offense of any FBS school in the last decade for an entire season)
3 turnovers
0 points

THAT is how you adjust, settle, lock in, and dominate an inferior opponent. They started 7 drives, 3 of them ended with turnovers, zero ended with them putting points on the board. I just cannot say enough about the defensive staff, their preparation, execution, the whole operation has been face-melting compared to what we saw last year. We are now in the Top 20 in basically every single defensive metric, including the advanced analytics, and haven't really played one cupcake yet. We still have Stanford, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Louisville, and SMU on this schedule. All of those teams are 54th or worse in the country in EPA/play on offense. The only team we play the rest of the way who has an offense ranked in the top half of the country is NC State, and it's at home. Yeah, the end of the game was a little frustrating, but when you make a team bite the curb for essentially 3 full quarters, it allows you to play a little softer and not gamble to give up big plays, potentially. And it's not like they went nuts late either. The first TD drive was 10 plays and only 47 yards after the targeting call on the punt. The last one was disappointing, they went 96 yards, but it took them 19 plays to do it. We just couldn't get off the field and were obviously content to let them take over 5 minutes off the clock to score. All in all, the defensive numbers continue to look incredible. Say what you want, but FSU came into the game with one of the best statistical offenses in the country, and we held them, on their field, to 3 points for the first 50 minutes of the game.

Offensively, I won't say I'm overly concerned, but it's just evident that this is nowhere near the same offense we saw last year, HOWEVER, I don't think the staff is asking or anywhere expecting it to be. Because of the defense. Yes, I'm an offensive guy, I want 8 yards per play, explosives everywhere, and 50 points a game. Paired with this defense. But, for one, that's not going to happen with this personnel, and for two, when your defense is this good, you don't need to take the chances we did last season on offense. Last year we had 16 turnovers in 12 FBS games. This year we have 3, in 4 games, against really good athletes. Florida, ND, and FSU have better athletes on defense than almost anyone we played last season. As far as this last game, I think more than anything it showed we have more than one way to beat you. FSU clearly came in with the mindset that they weren't going to get bullied in the run game, and they played very well up front IMO, so what did we do? Hit them for 2 passes of over 40 yards, 2 for touchdowns. You wanna play 8 in the box and run your safeties up at the first hint of a run? I'll throw it over your head. So, we can pound you in the run game. But if you sell out to stop that, we have an NFL quarterback who is now 29-3 as a starter and weapons in the throw game. Good luck.

So, the numbers are down from last year offensively. But I am fully convinced this is a much better football team, because of how complimentary we play. It's just clear that, down to down, we're successful, just not nearly as explosive as last year. For example, last year we were #1 in the country in success rate, and the number for the full season was 50.5%. This year, we're 13th, but the number is 49.7%. So the schedules and sample sizes are still impacting this here. I still think we're going to wind up having one of the 20-25 best offenses in the country at the end of the day, but I definitely feel like there's a lot of room to improve here. We didn't run it nearly well enough on Saturday. I believe we only had one run of over 10 yards by the backs (Marion had another). But we only had a 37% success rate Saturday. Where we took advantage was we threw it REALLY well, and we capitalized on their mistakes. We had more 40+ yard completions in this game (3), than we did in the other 3 games combined (1). So, we didn't have a massive number of explosives, but the ones we did, were GIGANTIC plays and went for touchdowns or long gains into the redzone.

Oh, and one more thing:

Put some ******* respect on Carson Beck's name.

Go Canes.
