I have a feeling that Mike Smith is gonna break out in a major way next season.

With Manny Diaz tendency to blitz heavily, I really believe Mike Smith will become our best blitzing LB. He's not a read and react LB, that's why he rode the oak.

If he would've spent his career under D'Nofrio, he wouldn't have gotten much, if any burn. Now with Diaz at the helm, he will have the potential to be All-ACC. Watch.

This isn't high school anymore. He's got to get bigger, stronger, and faster if he wants to sniff the field.

6'2 230 and running a 5+ 40 isn't getting you very far

I like this call. He showed up in our bowl game. His HS film suggests he is well suited for blitzing. I think we're going to see more than 1 blitz scheme this year. Will be nice to have coaches that will mix it up.

Go Canes!

Not sure if he'll be All ACC next year, but he flashed great potential at NW. He is a guy who liked getting up field, so this should be an ideal situation for him. He's got a clean start.

I could see this but I think he actually needs to slim down. He looked slow and clunky with that Golden weight on him.

I think we're going to see some filthy play from our front 7. I hope Charles Perry, D Jack & Jamie Gordinier ball out too along with smith

Somehow it got him to 73 tackles and second in Dade County with 18 sacks as a senior.

Like a lot of guys coming in, he just needs a competent S&C program to develop his body. He'll be alright.

Don't he sniffs the field next year with crop of backers we have coming in

Mike smith should add 20 more pounds and become strictly a pass rushing specialist. His 40 yard dash wouldn't matter then. For dlineman the first 10 yards is far more important

Unless he improves his speed and quickness the only thing I'll be watching for is rather he's handing out towels or water.

He should add 20 more pounds and cover slot receivers...oh, wait! I forgot, this isn't Golden Ball anymore.

Smith isn't only going to be battling against guys like Tool box Trent and Owens anymore though, we have some Freshman coming in that are going to push for playing time from day 1. I loved Smith's tape at NW, hopefully he can regain the explosiveness that he seemed to lose when he hurt his knee and provide some depth and situational pass rushing.

This. He got fattened up too much by Alf to the point that his strength was taken away. Unfortunately he's a tweeter who happens to be light and slow - deadly combo.

Don't get me wrong, he was a good high school player and I would like to see him find success here. I think he will have a role on the team as a pass rusher, and he may excel at it. This scheme is ideal for him, but he's just not going to be more than a role player due to the lack of size, speed, or strength. Usually you need 2 of those traits, he has none. Unless our S&C program just works an absolute miracle he will use his one trait, pass rushing ability, and I'm fine with that. It's a win if he finds a role on this team, at least we get something out of him because Golden and No D were never going to make anything out of him
