With the 2012 High School Football season approaching quickly, here are the top games to see in Miami this year.

1. Booker T-Central (Saturday, September 8th)
The amount of elite talent in this game crazy. It will be the best compilation of prospects in a game this year. There are 9 kids in the game who are or could potentially be a 4 or 5 star recruit.

Booker T
2013 LB Matthew Thomas, 2013 OL Denver Kirkland, 2014 QB Treon Harris, 2014 CB Nigel Patten, 2014 DL Chad Thomas

Central
2013 S Ahmad Thomas (Oklahoma), 2013 K Emilio Nadelman (FIU, 2013 CB Da’Wan Hunte (NC State), 2014 RB Joseph Yearby (FSU), 2014 RB Dalvin Cook (Clemson), 2014 OL Trevor Darling (Miami)

Key Matchup: Matthew Thomas vs. Trevor Darling

Two of the best players in South Florida, this will be an extremely interesting match-up. Darling, the Miami commit, will be going up against one of the best pass-rushers in the country. It will be a great test for both of them. Darling has the size advantage, but Thomas has incredible speed off the edge.

2. Central-Miami Northwestern (Friday, October 26th)
In almost any other year, this would be the #1 game. It is the biggest rivalry in Miami bar none. This game is the symbol of high school football in Miami.

Central
2013 S Ahmad Thomas (Oklahoma), 2013 K Emilio Nadelman (FIU), 2013 CB Da’Wan Hunte (NC State), 2014 RB Joseph Yearby (FSU), 2014 RB Dalvin Cook (Clemson), 2014 OL Trevor Darling (Miami)

MNW
2013 DB Artie Burns (Miami), 2013 OL/DL Gerald Wright (Marshall), 2014 ATH JoJo Robinson (FSU)

3. Columbus-St. Thomas Aquinas (Friday, August 31st)
The nationally televised game is considered a preseason matchup, but the hype is already building on both sides. While this isn’t a true Dade County match-up, I felt it belonged because it is only the second time these two powerhouse programs have met.

Columbus
2013 WR Jesus Wilson (FSU), 2013 RB Daryl Chestnut, 2013 RB Lorenzo Woodley, 2014 RB Oshton Armstrong, 2013 LB Mikey Ferro, 2015 QB Tucker Beirne

STA
2013 QB John O’Korn (Houston), 2013 RB Fred Coppet, 2013 DL Joey Bosa (Ohio State), 2013 LB Lance Virgile, 2014 WR Corey Holmes, 2014 DL Anthony Moten

Key Matchup: Columbus OL vs. STA DL
Columbus loses 3 starters on the offensive line, while the defensive line is the strength of Aquinas’ team. It will be interesting to see how the Explorers handle Bosa and Moten. If they can open up holes for the talented running backs, they have a good chance of winning the game.

4. Columbus-Central (Friday, September 28th)

This was an incredible game last year, as Yearby ran for over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns. Columbus had a chance to win it late, but could not get it done.

Columbus
2013 WR Jesus Wilson (FSU), 2013 RB Daryl Chestnut, 2013 RB Lorenzo Woodley, 2014 RB Oshton Armstrong, 2013 LB Mikey Ferro, 2015 QB Tucker Beirne

Central
2013 S Ahmad Thomas (Oklahoma), 2013 K Emilio Nadelman (FIU), 2013 CB Da’Wan Hunte (NC State), 2014 RB Joseph Yearby (FSU), 2014 RB Dalvin Cook (Clemson), 2014 OL Trevor Darling (Miami)

Key Matchup: Columbus Front 7 vs. Central Run Game
Last Year, Yearby and Cook ran for over 300 yards on the Columbus defense. It was too easy at times for the Rockets offense. Yearby was untouched on many long runs and there was a lot of sloppy tackling by the Explorers. They will have to play a more disciplined ball game this year in order to have a chance.

5. Columbus-Southridge (TBA)
This matchup is already garnering a lot of talk between the two teams. Columbus beat Southridge twice last season, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. In the first game, the Explorers beat the Spartans with 8 seconds left on a Brandon Radcliff touchdown. The playoff game was a little easier for CCHS, but the Spartans expect to have a much better team this year under the direction of new coach Lamont Green, who led perennial 3-4 win school South Miami to 9 wins last year. Palmetto QB transfer Troy Cook is also going to have a huge impact on the team.

Columbus
2013 WR Jesus Wilson (FSU), 2013 RB Daryl Chestnut, 2013 RB Lorenzo Woodley, 2014 RB Oshton Armstrong, 2013 LB Mikey Ferro, 2015 QB Tucker Beirne

Southridge
2013 QB Troy Cook, 2013 DB Jamal Carter (Miami), 2013 DB Lamar Robbins, 2014 RB Jamal Adjamah, 2014 LB Frank Newman

Key Matchup: Jamal Carter vs. Jesus Wilson
Carter and Wilson are childhood friends. Wilson is an explosive playmaker, who Columbus will get the ball to in a multitude of ways. Carter will most likely be targeting him in this game. Wilson is extremely quick in and out of his cuts, so it will be interesting to see how the much bigger Carter matches up with him in the game.

6. Booker T-Southridge (Friday, November 9th)

Booker T
2013 LB Matthew Thomas, 2013 OL Denver Kirkland, 2014 QB Treon Harris, 2014 CB Nigel Patten, 2014 DL Chad Thomas

Southridge
2013 QB Troy Cook, 2013 DB Jamal Carter (Miami), 2013 DB Lamar Robbins, 2014 RB Jamal Adjamah, 2014 LB Frank Newman

Key Matchup: Treon Harris vs. Jamal Carter
The Quarterback of the Booker T offense against the Quarterback of the Southridge defense. Harris is very deceptive, he can run or pass and almost always makes the right play. It will be up to Carter from the safety position to help contain Harris from doing whatever he wants.

7. Homestead-Central (Friday, October 5th)
Homestead is one of my favorite teams in South Florida this year. Led by Ermon Lane, they will be one of the most exciting teams in the county to watch. This will be a major test for them against the powerhouse Rockets.

Homestead
2014 WR Ermon Lane, 2014 ATH Mario Mezier, 2015 RB Johnnie Hankins, 2015 QB Maurice Alexander

Central
2013 S Ahmad Thomas (Oklahoma), 2013 K Emilio Nadelman (FIU), 2013 CB Da’Wan Hunte (NC State), 2014 RB Joseph Yearby (FSU), 2014 RB Dalvin Cook (Clemson), 2014 OL Trevor Darling (Miami)

Key Matchup: Ermon Lane vs. the Central secondary
The Rockets have a good secondary this year, but they will need multiple DBs to contain Lane. There is no doubt they will be doubling him for most of the game, so it will be interesting to see how he can produce with all the attention on him.

8. Belen Jesuit-Columbus (Friday, September 7th)
Right up there with the Central-MNW rivalry, Belen and Columbus don’t like each other…at all. The first match-up between these two schools was in 2005 when they finally agree to play each other. Columbus has won every game in the series. The game has been played at FIU and the game is sold out every year.

Belen
2013 QB Ryan Murphy, 2013 DL Cris Garcia, 2013 LB Camilo Padron, 2013 DB Austin Riveron, 2013 DB Xavier Hines

Columbus
2013 WR Jesus Wilson (FSU), 2013 RB Daryl Chestnut, 2013 RB Lorenzo Woodley, 2014 RB Oshton Armstrong, 2013 LB Mikey Ferro, 2015 QB Tucker Beirne

Key Matchup: Belen Front 7 vs. Columbus Run Game
The Explorers ran wild on Belen last year, with Lorenzo Woodley and Daryl Chestnut both having long touchdown runs and Brandon Radcliff wearing the Wolverines down throughout the game. Radcliff is graduated, but Belen still has Woodley and Chestnut to deal with.

9. Booker T-Miami Northwestern (Saturday, August 25th)
A preseason matchup, these teams aren’t treating it like that whatsoever. There has already been a lot of trash talking going on between the two sides and that will only get louder as the game approaches.

Booker T
2013 LB Matthew Thomas, 2013 OL Denver Kirkland, 2014 QB Treon Harris, 2014 CB Nigel Patten, 2014 DL Chad Thomas

MNW
2013 DB Artie Burns (Miami), 2013 OL/DL Gerald Wright (Marshall), 2014 ATH JoJo Robinson (FSU)

Key Matchup: MNW OL vs. Booker T DL
The Bulls have a very good offensive line, while the Tornadoes obviously have a dominant line, led by Matthew and Chad Thomas. MNW will be breaking in a new QB this year, and this is the first game of the year, so they must keep the Tornado defenders off of him if they expect to have a chance.

10. Homestead-MNW (Friday, November 2nd)
Another big test for the Broncos as they face MNW.

Homestead
2014 WR Ermon Lane, 2014 ATH Mario Mezier, 2015 RB Johnnie Hankins, 2015 QB Maurice Alexander

MNW
2013 DB Artie Burns (Miami), 2013 OL/DL Gerald Wright (Marshall), 2014 ATH JoJo Robinson (FSU)

Key Matchup: Artie Burns vs. Ermon Lane
One of the most intriguing match-ups on the list, the best receiver in South Florida goes up against one of the best, if not the best corner. Burns, the recent Miami commitment, might be the only DB in the county (along with Jamal Carter) who was the size and speed to be able to match-up with Lane. This is probably the one-on-one battle I’m most excited about on the list.

11. Homestead-Southridge (Friday, September 7th)

Homestead
2014 WR Ermon Lane, 2014 ATH Mario Mezier, 2015 RB Johnnie Hankins, 2015 QB Maurice Alexander

Southridge
2013 QB Troy Cook, 2013 DB Jamal Carter (Miami), 2013 DB Lamar Robbins, 2014 RB Jamal Adjamah, 2014 LB Frank Newman

Key Matchup: Jamal Carter vs. Ermon Lane
Very Similar to matchup #11 on this list, Lane goes up against a Miami defensive back commit with elite athletic ability. Carter isn’t a true corner, but this will be a great test of his cover skills because he will be asked to cover him in all likelihood. Lamar Robbins will also be used to cover Lane.

12. Columbus-MNW (Saturday, October 13th)
The Bulls beat the Explorers last year after falling behind 0-15 in the first quarter. Amari Cooper scored 2 long touchdowns (not on Deon Bush) and EJ Hilliard carved up the Columbus defense.

Columbus
2013 WR Jesus Wilson (FSU), 2013 RB Daryl Chestnut, 2013 RB Lorenzo Woodley, 2014 RB Oshton Armstrong, 2013 LB Mikey Ferro, 2015 QB Tucker Beirne

MNW
2013 DB Artie Burns (Miami), 2013 OL/DL Gerald Wright (Marshall), 2014 ATH JoJo Robinson (FSU)

Key Matchup: Artie Burns vs. Jesus Wilson
Burns will be covering a smaller, quicker receiver in Wilson. It will be a good test of his pure cover skills because Wilson is an exceptional route runner and can line up all over the field, from either the slot or on the outside.

13. Central-Belen Jesuit (Friday, November 2nd)
One of the most exciting games of last year’s season, the Rockets beat the Wolverines 59-56 in 4OT in a playoff matchup. Belen doesn’t matchup from a talent standpoint, but their disciplined play could keep them in the game once again.

Central
2013 S Ahmad Thomas (Oklahoma), 2013 K Emilio Nadelman (FIU), 2013 CB Da’Wan Hunte (NC State), 2014 RB Joseph Yearby (FSU), 2014 RB Dalvin Cook (Clemson), 2014 OL Trevor Darling (Miami)

Belen
2013 QB Ryan Murphy, 2013 DL Cris Garcia, 2013 LB Camilo Padron, 2013 DB Austin Riveron, 2013 DB Xavier Hines

Key Matchup: Central Front 7 vs. Belen Offense
The Wolverines run the Wing-T, which gave Central fits last year. It will be up to their front 7 to slow it down this year. Expect a lot of misdirection plays, which catch the opposing defense off-guard. The rockets need to stay disciplined.

14. Killian-Southridge (Friday, September 21)
Another big rivalry game, Killian looks to surprise people this year. They will be tested by a talented Southridge team.

Killian
2014 CB Trumaine Washington, 2014 WR Malcolm Vandergass, 2014 ATH Nigel Dillard, 2015 ATH JaQuan Johnson

Southridge
2013 QB Troy Cook, 2013 DB Jamal Carter (Miami), 2013 DB Lamar Robbins, 2014 RB Jamal Adjamah, 2014 LB Frank Newman

Key Matchup: Trumaine Washington vs. Jamal Carter
Jamal Carter also plays receiver for the Spartans, and in this game Washington will most likely cover him. Washington is a smaller corner, but has great cover skills. This will be a big test for him against the bigger Carter.

15. Coral Reef-Southridge (Thursday, November 1st)
The ‘Cudas have an explosive offense this year, led by 6’3 QB Nico Pierre and explosive WR Jake McCrary. It will be a nice matchup against the Southridge secondary.

Coral Reef
2014 QB Nicodem Pierre, 2014 WR Jacob McCrary (FSU)

Southridge
2013 QB Troy Cook, 2013 DB Jamal Carter (Miami), 2013 DB Lamar Robbins, 2014 RB Jamal Adjamah, 2014 LB Frank Newman

Key Matchup: Southridge Secondary vs. Coral Reef pass game
The Spartans’ DBs will need to keep a close eye on McCrary, who can break a game open on any play. Carter and Robbins in particular will have this task.

Thanks for the write-up. Great stuff!

Moral of the post - If you want to watch the best of Miami-Dade football, basically just follow District 16-6A (Central, MNW, Belen, Homestead, Carol City)

I got these from floridahsfootball.com. They're missing some games, but it has the majority of them.
