I was at UM in the days of freshman football. The NCAA did away with freshman football so that they could be allowed to play on (in those days) the varsity. The red shirt stuff is a crock of isht. They wanted freshmen to play, so let them ALL play and change the rule allowing them to jump to the NFL three years out from their HS class graduation. It should be 4 years, or degree, whichever comes first.
Oh good the Boomers have weighed in.

Definitely no point in shirting RBs (assuming they are healthy). If they are good, they are gone after 3 years anyway.

Thoughts on Lingard red-shirting this year??
Not going to redshirt. It wouldn't matter if he did. If he redshirts, he's not going to be here for his redshirt senior year barring injury anyway.

For the guys that would move onto the NFL in their junior or senior year, there is no reason to redshirt them for the same reason I mentioned above.

I am a little surprised by the use of the freshman that they plan to redshirt.

Would have thought they would have been used closer to the end of the season during the late grind against the weaker ACC teams as opposed to the beginning of the season.

How do you even know Miami is gonna blow out the weaker ACC teams at the end of the season and play the freshmen?

Probably wanted to get a feel for which ones are ready to count on as much-needed depth for the remainder of the season. If they waited for the ACC part of the schedule, they would be experimenting with untested freshmen during crucial conference games.

IMO Frieson is a safety, we just don’t have a lot of depth at corner.

Due to the NCAA's new rule, a player can play in up to 4 games and still receive a redshirt designation.

8 of Miami’s 23 true freshman have played in 5 games and have burned their redshirt. They are: Hightower, Wiggins, Jordan, Mallory, Scaife, Ivey, Blades, and Baxa.

3 others have played in 4 games and seem likely to burn their redshirt at some point. They are: Lingard, Silvera, and Hall.

That means Miami still has decisions to make on 12 guys. They are: Williams, Davis, George, Pope, Ezzard, Campbell, Reed, Rousseau, Joyner, Miller, Frierson, and Bethel.

Here's a chart to keep track of how many games a player has participated in so far in 2018 (data is from UM's own official participation charts).

The rule does not only apply to true freshmen, though. Here are the non-freshman UM players that have yet to redshirt in their career and have played in 4 or less games this season, making them technically still eligible to redshirt this year.

Ditto.. Wondering the same thing.
Was injured coming out of highschool and isn’t physically strong enough yet. Hopefully by next year he has added the muscle and weight needed to play tackle on the collegiate level.
