Quarterback Offer Breakdown: Max Johnson

Hey, Thanks for taking this discussion to the sewer.
This is the guy I would like to see us sign in 2020... just don't think its a slam dunk at this point. If he and Chaney jump on board early, that class will be insane. With the guys we already have committed, we can seriously contend for the #1 class in 2020.

I'm not 100% sold on recruiting him. I'm not debating his talent level, that is why the coaching staff and knowledgeable football minds like Roman like the kid. I'm in from the talent perspective 100%. Miami will continue to recruit top tier QBs, what happens if the nephew doesn't win the job? is that a concern for the family? Would other QBs in 2021 and after be concerned that the QB job is tagged to Max Johnson and stay away from Miami? Would the rest of the team see Max as the coaches’ pet? Would the coaching staff be able to punish Max if needed, would they suspend him/kick him out if it comes to it? I also realize that his younger brother is a star in the making. Being older I remember Dennis Ericsson allowing his son to play for us, he was obviously not very good and a walk on at first, but I remember reading about several issues within the team. And also what happens if Max sees a player doing something wrong, or discussing a transfer, or just having a bad day and cursing at the coaches. Would Max over Thanksgiving dinner talk to his family? Would the other players trust him? That is why I respect Michael Johnson potentially leaving Oregon and creating his own path. I want this top QB and his brother a few years later to commit to us, but is it the right thing to do for us and the kid?

50% of College QB's ranked 3 star or higher transfer. Just keep recruiting QB's no matter what anyone on the team or their position thinks, period. Brad Johnson is certainly smart enough to teach his son that NO coach is going do him any favors he has to earn his way. Look at Brad Johnsons long career path. You can't pass up on a kid like Max to cater to kids with insecurities on the team who will feel slighted.

I'm not even going to get into the snitching at the dinner table thing that's just dumb.

I'm not sure who the last lefty was that Miami had.

But Johnson could be our guy at QB from the '20 class.

Already solid size for a QB and he'll probably be bigger in the future.

His pappy was 6'6" and probably 225 - 230 when he played at FSU. About the same in the NFL with the Bears, I think.

That started a game? Probably John Hornibrook. For some reason, I was also thinking Mike Rodrigue but I'm pretty sure he was a righty.

His cousin would be his position coach and his uncle would be his head coach. I've always wondered how recruiting him works in the eyes of the NCAA. If its thanksgiving and they're all together, can Mark Richt ask his sister where her son is going to school? Can he give his opinion as long as he doesn't talk about football? Does Max have to leave the room if Mark, Jon and Brad get into a debate about which school is better for QBs?
I think you mean sister... she is a FSU alum as well and played volleyball there.
You're correct sir. Even better for us, I'd bet she wants her son playing for her brother "the pastor".

Max operates in a very pro style offense and in a traditional under center capacity. If Richt has a penchant to go back to more of his under center concepts I see ZERO issues with a quarterback like Max being able to adapt to it.

I know there is a sizable contingent that want a complete spread implementation but Miami affectionately operated in a pro spread last year. I think that "pro" moniker allows you to integrate seamlessly if you chose to. NFL has in effect integrated so many college derived spread concepts into its game that the line has become more obscured.

Ultimately Richt seems content adapting the offense to the personnel. His first year was 12 set heavy two tight end based (For Good reason) and shifted last year into the more open gun 11 set concepts. I also see Richt adapting the offense with who his quarterback is.

Just take this into account, the number one QB this year is Michael Johnson Jr. Assuming Max Johnson is the number one next year and you landed both those are two completely different skill sets. Ultimately I think you would see two separate offensive archetypes emerge.

"Think players not plays" seems to be a governing strategy at work here.

I think it's obvious that the most successful coaches adapt to their personnel rather than pigeonhole themselves to a particular scheme. Think Eagles. I never followed UGA much when Richt was there, but from what I did see, he did just that - adapted to the personnel available. As much as I hate to admit it, he did that very same thing with the semiholes.

I dont think people realize what this is....the level of sophistication regarding is footwork and pocket mobility at this age is tremendous! That staff got this guy play action faking, rolling to his right side (which is his off hand)and making deep out/comebacks throws and from mostly under center. At this age he will only get better as he refines is throwing mechanics and gets stronger. I like his film as a sophomore over a lot of '19 guys because of the upside and he passes the "eye" test along with a background rooted in qb excellence....i think some of the fan base wants Miami as a full fledge spread offense when in fact...UM can run any offense it wants with the personnel the staff is getting. Max Johnson is the true pro style guy that can play in an under the center scheme or spread scheme. Its either him or Harrison Bailey.

Johnson in FSUs system is like imagining Tom Brady running the wishbone. Not gonna happen. Bigger threat would be Bama or Georgia.

Thinkk you need to start improving your "Roman Rank" Thing. You're just going to be saying 4 star about basically everyone.

Need to add some decimals to that motheu****er bruh. loke MJJr is a 4.66, and Tia is a 4.7, etc....

****Or do it like you would a qb entering the draft.

accuracy/30
athleticism & pocket movement/20
arm strength/15
footwork & throwing motion/10
decision making/8
under pressure /8
production (comp%,TD%,INT%,Y/A)/8
everyone gets a bonus point!
---------------------------------TOTAL/100
Then divide your total by 18 and thats your star ranking....I'm saying divide by 18 so that a qb doesn't need a perfect 100 to be rated 5*, but it should still be really difficult to get the 5* ranking.

 Fair enough. I did throw a "low 4 star" in there for Howell. And I was close to not ranking Max all together. Figured he was a sophomore and I should rank him after this year...(Plus I had a sneaky suspicion that someone was going to notice the recent 4 star trend-and I was right.)

Ultimately I will get to some 3 star guys coming up soon don't you worry. I do like your idea to at least fractionalize the rankings. Thanks for keeping it honest.

Just a shot in the dark estimation so you know where I stand though...

Graham Mertz 4.4
Michael Johnson JR 4.2
Taisun Phommacahn 4.2
Sam Howell 4.0

Sophomore Ranking Max Johnson 4.0 (That will go up this year)

Okay cool.
I'm just saying since you already divide the breakdown into a few sections - accuracy/strength/mobility/etc it wouldn't be that much harder to throw a number out for those categories. It would be really helpful to see like how good or bad a guy is in his footwork or something or decision making, or how athletic/mobile a dude is from the perspective of someone better informed. Its especially helpful because it would kinda take your bias out of it as well. like you probably like Mertz more because he is the best pure passer, but it would let us see how far away a guy like Johnson Jr is from being at that level.

anyways thanks for all the breakdowns.

No doubt, there will be more, but to say if we want him, we will get him is just wishful thinking. There were/are lots of players past and present we wanted that went elsewhere.
The offense their running at FSU eliminates Max for them.

His dad actually moved around surprisingly well for a big freckled dork. Don’t know if the kid moves as well, but if those **** *** numbers are accurate playing against quadriplegics then color me cautious.
