This is a great tale of how our political beliefs cloud the way we think. Democrats were outraged when the Patriot Act was passed. Republicans said "you're with us, or you're against us". Obama gets elected, nothing changes, and Democrats now go silent. Republicans are outraged. It shows how broken we are as this should be one thing we agree needs to go, but as everything else ends up being partisan bickering.

Back in the early 70's, when I was in Military intelligence, the US Army was spying on US citizens in the USA, including infiltrating Columbia demonstrators and opening and reading mail going into and out of the country at airports of departure, among other goodies.

The older I get the more it’s getting harder for me not to believe that the 2 party system is just a facade.

The two party system is the government versus the people at this point.

Many don’t realize this. The government has done a good job with the divide and conquer approach when it comes to the populace.

Government has gotten way out of hand compared to what the Founding Fathers envisioned, IMO.

For a lot of people, it's not even about political or ideological views more so what's in the hearts of people in our society and in this country. There's so much greed and hatred for things most of them know nothing about. People are afraid of things they don't understand or what is different from what their familiar with. Most people want the same things out of life, health, livable wages (being paid what you are actually worth, and happy family. We allow folks to pigeon hole us into two categories Democrats or Republicans when I'm sure a lot of people agree with varying ideals from both parties. Most Politicians don't care about the average hardworking person, but Americans are fooling themselves to think that they do.

Nobody that believes in personally liberties was for the Patriot Act. IMO all it did was legalize what they were already doing anyway. The government has been spying on people since the beginning of time claiming they are “keeping us safe.” Now is the perfect time to kill that narrative. The government can’t keep anybody safe. The quicker you learn you have to protect yourself and do what’s best for you, the better off you’ll be.

We would be much better off if everyone understood that, instead of caping for someone who wouldn’t think twice to look at you.

Dems didn't just go silent, they reapproved it and made it permanent.

But everything is awesome when the right team does it.

Not only is blaming the other party for doing the same sht your party does a problem. It’s a bigger problem to refuse to listen to to or agree with something that makes sense and may be brilliant just because they’re from another party.
Freaking Washington stalemates all the time for no reason at all.

The world has changed a lot since 1787 and there are things the founders never envisioned. Jefferson has a fantastic quote about things changing and it's up inside his memorial in Washington DC.

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."

The system is broken and rotten more than ever. Politics at the end is just for the administration of the status quo and rich get richer and poor get more so the gap is bigger than ever. Just like football.

That is obviously true when it comes to specifics. Civilization is no where near the same.

I was thinking in a more general ideological sense of what they envisioned. Federal government was not supposed to be the juggernaut that it is. Elected officials were not meant to be career politicians. The citizen was meant to have a more significant say in the way the country was run.

It is always wrong to surrender freedoms so many bled to obtain and keep. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Just look how hard it is the just get the "right" to eat out again. There is nothing wrong with shedding the blood of those who threaten our freedoms, even if it is unpopular. I am independent with right leanings so no need to decide based on party. Patriot Act was clearly dangerous like anything giving the government power.

There four nations we could choose from to punish, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Gee, lets pick the country that has bled the biggest and most determined empires in history to death. Then lets go with the one that had nothing to do with it. No way should be attack the one that produced the actual attackers or maybe, just maybe, the country that has been killing Americans and supporting terrorism since the 70's. Nay, those two are hands off.

The Roman empire also was a two party system while it was a republic. The parties got so divided and corrupt that they actually compromised
and put in place an Emperor instead. That did not end the corruption but at least things got done, some good some bad.
