Today is a good day for all of us to put our money where our mouth is when it comes to respect for our veterans and expressing gratitude. There are hundreds of charities out there, but here are just a handful of some of the generally well-regarded charities doing good for veterans, servicemembers, and their families:

They build and operate "comfort homes" for military and veterans' families to stay while they receive treatment at VA and military medical centers around the world. They also help with transportation costs for the families.

This is a sweet charity. It provides trained service dogs to military veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, or sexual trauma. Most of the dogs come from kill rescue shelters, so it's also a charity for dog lovers.

This charity provides scholarships and college/educational counseling to the children of military men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Personal favorite.

Mostly they send care packages to veterans and first responders as a means to show gratitude and appreciation. Simple, grassroots, and meaningful.

I've volunteered with Fisher House, helped cook dinner for a few dozen vets and their families one evening. It was a great experience spending time with them and talking shop, they were very appreciative.

"Live a life worthy of their sacrifice"

As a veteran, we are not what today is about. Today is to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. I'll take me free meal at the Olive Garden on Nov 11th, but today is all about remembering and thanking those who gave everything.
