I can be both celebratory and critical (thoughts on the FSU victory)...

Miami weathered the early and late storm in Tallahassee to defeat FSU 28-22. This after leading 28-3 going into the fourth quarter. This was a victory that was both satisfying (any rivalry win is) and a bit frustrating at the same time with how the #Canes couldn't just deliver the final knockout blow at Doak Campbell.

Still, 5-0, and once again Miami is the State Champions having beaten Florida, FSU and USF. I'll take that any year. It's a far cry from getting blown out by the Noles 45-3 a few years ago.

But again, if Cristobal is a coach who truly has championship aspirations, he absolutely harps on the last 15 minutes of that game in the bye week. That's what coaches are supposed to do. To be clear, I don't actually put all of this on Cristobal, you could see his frustration on this sideline in the final quarter. This is something that the players have to alter in terms of their mindset.

A few thoughts on the game..

- Malachi Toney is a special player. He is wise beyond his years and just has that 'it' factor. 7 grabs 107 yards and a touchdown. And another that was wiped out. This is the best true freshman WR in the land.

- Speaking of which, more pre-snap penalties that either took points off the board, or put us behind the chains that lead to unfavorable down and distance situations. There's a huge difference between 3rd and 7, and 3rd and 7. The percentages don't lie

- Miami was leading 14-3 and it felt like it should've been more at the half. Again, little things kept that from happening but it was clear the Canes were the bigger, stronger team on that field at Doak Campbell.

- Bain and Mesidor didn't have a ton of sacks, but on a play to play basis they had a consistent impact. Thomas Castellanos is a difficult guy to corral, and for about 45 minutes they did a great job overall. Cory Heatherman talks about being ''the most violent team in the country'', well, after that initial drive to begin the game and all the way till the last few drives, they were. It was an incredible performance by this defensive unit

- All the bells and whistles of Malzahn, and all gadget plays he dialed up, this unit looked very well prepared

- Jakobe Thomas might be the most underrated portal acquisition in the country. The guy has been an absolute stalwart at safety. And he packs a punch physically and hasn't been a liability out in space.

- Carson Beck was in command throughout, hit a few big shots in the first half and was always in control. 20 for 27, 240 yards and 4 touchdowns. Ken Dorsey would approve

- Overall big picture, this program has come so far under the direction of Cristobal, but still has a ways to go. But I look at tonight as a good thing. They won a rivalry game in prime time in front of a national audience and still have things that coaches can work on. Winning isn't easy, maybe when I was a younger Miami fan I took it for granted. Well, after the last two decades, I don't.

Hey, let's enjoy this. We've seen and been through a ton of bad/mediocre football the past two decades. I do think these are fixable issues. Now, we move onto a bye week and face a very flawed Louisville squad. As I said to DMoney and Petey a few days ago, if we beat FSU -- we run the regular season table.

I haven't changed my mind on that

Hey, it's great to be,....

I like this take, it’s great to win and there is a ton of good, but there are people trying to understate the bad. You should never ignore a trend. There are some red flags.. Mario seems to see it, so not worried, but def took the wind out of the sails.

We go on 15-30 min stretches where we look how Miami should look. Then we do the opposite for 15 or so minutes. It’s happened and all 3 big games this year

Not sure what the fix is, but it’s definitely frustrating and becoming a trend
Serious question, What college kids (teams) don’t do that? Oregon did, Texas did, Alabama did, Ohio state did

The penalties, us taking our foot off the pedal and sort of going in a shell have killed this team in certain moments but a rivalry win on the road is still huge. We just have to start fixing that stuff before the end of the year if we want to go deep in playoff and potentially win the national championship. Go canes!

Yes, this exactly! This team can win it all! I just want to see us play to our dang potential!

Very good analysis but we will never win a National Championship with Mario and Dawson. I would prefer Lanning as a head coach. Mario is a recruiter who is stealing money as a head coach. He has NO buinsess being on the sidelines. Just like the ND game he almost gave this one away too. The penalties are indicative of a poorly coached team. We are in our 4th year under Mario and he still can't get a handle on it. MMMMMM

Its weird.

We dont play steady ball. Its ups and downs on offense.

Defense is more consistent but completely phoned it in in the 4th quarter. They were gassed too.

I like all of that and agree with it.

I also love that you didn't use the new CIS buzzword, trend.

I actually fell asleep at 28 to 11 and just finished the rest. The weird 4th down play where we tried to be cute, get them to jump, and execution there was terrible. Put the FG kicker in and put the game out of reach.

Wes then just about picks off a ball, but it still makes it to the intended receiver.

Overall, **** finish. Those last few minutes, just put it away and don't overrhink what 3 points does there. Quit the corching, even if you have a play that should work, we saw how it didn't.

Miami’s next and only real threat going forward is Miami . Are we grown enough that we can handle that pressure especially in November . That’s the last two demons that needs exercised
