-The Canes have lost 13 players to the MLB first year player draft the last 3 years
-The Canes top signee is Matt McPhearson from MD who is a leadoff/stolen base guy
-McPhearson is the 100th ranked prospect per Perfect Game and is projected to be drafted in the 3rd round
-Catcher Zach Collins is ranked 110th, projected 4th round
-LHP JD Underwood is ranked 153rd, projected 5th round
-OF Willie Abreu is ranked 175th, projected 6th round
-OF Jacob Heyward (younger brother of MLBer Jason Heyward) is ranked 340th, projected 11th round
-RHP Andy Honiotes is ranked 391st, projected 12th round
-Perfect Game ranks Miami's class 4th in the nation
-Collins, Abreu, and Heyward have shown power at the HS level
-Collins can also play 1B and hit .442 as a senior
-Abreu hit .512 as a senior
-Heyward may not have the same tools as his brother, but has show some pop and is an intriguing prospect
-The Miami staff is selling hard the fact that no other school had more kids reach MLB in 2011/2012 than Miami
-Mentions how Ryan Braun, John Jay, and Chris Perez werent drafted out of HS

4 stud outfield signees in McPhearson, Abreu, Heyward and Kaplan...hopefully we get 2 on campus...3 we turn cartwheels.

OF is definitely a position of need for next year. Any of those 4 will probably be impact players on next years roster. I really like McPherson and Abreu.
 
Seems like Kaplan is going to be here, Heyward is a solid bet, and Abreu and McPhearson are longshots. If we can get the first two and one or the other of between Abreau and McPhearson...and Grant Heyman and Eusebio do some developing...

Crap. Doing it again. I'm the same guy who though Dale Carey could be Tekotte.
 
Heyward and Kaplan will almost certainly enroll, but there's almost no chance at either Abreu or McPhearson. I think the chances with Zack Collins are actually a little better because scouts are unsure about his position and he wants a ton of money to sign.


Beauprez could be the first baseman we've been missing since Yonder left. Big kid with a lot of power. We have some really good pitchers coming in too. Honiotes was considered a top 5 round pick before he hurt his arm and Roth has been pitching at 92-93 this spring.
 
Abreu is coming played with him never seen anyone that works harder kid is a flat out stud with a smooth lefty swing and his dad is a teacher education comes before baseball to them
 
We need to sell them on the fact that a lot of the top mlb draft prospects (who played in college) are making it to the show quicker than ever.

Yasmani and Yonder got the call two years after being drafted.

David Price (played at Vanderbilt) got the call after 1.5 years.

This kid Michael Wacha (played at Texas A&M) got the call after playing less than a year in the minors.

If I'm an MLB GM, I'm drafting guys with college experience over kids who are straight out of high school (there are always exceptions to that).

That's just the feeling I've been getting lately.

Heyward isn't in the same class with his brother coming out of HS. Has pop and can drive the fastball, but lacks real plate discipline and like young hitters can be fooled by off-speed stuff. Last name has opened some doors and can be full of himself.

If you're going out of state, don't skip the midlands of South Carolina. That is why SC has been dominating recently.

I'm biased bc my HS just won 4A State 'ship, but they're #9 nationally and loaded. I am pretty sure the top 2 pitchers have already committed to the Gamecocks, but there are a lot of really good teams in the area with great talent. Leggitt beginning to ignore the area is a big reason SC has gone further up and Clemson is sinking.

I know Miami's gotta get SFL locked down, but just sayin' you can't ignore that microregion if you're gonna go "OOS"

And, of course, if our AD would hire Calvi from South Alabama, the former USCe pitching coach, we'd have ties to the area.

Right, we lost 6-4 to a Super Regional team, but looked like a little league team. I guess if we played like a college team we would have beat them a hundred to nothing.

If you are ok with losing the way the team has the last few seasons with poor base running, inability to bunt effectively, errors and being caught off guard, that is on you.

I'd rather a team beat us than give games away.

UM has always recruited well OOS. But that comment seems to imply that we've put all our eggs in the SoFla basket lately? I didn't realize that was the case. If it is the case, is that so bad?

Louisville game small example -- HBP/Misplayed ball/HBP/Walk in a Run/Caught off guard on squeeze play --- Game over!
- Umps weren't the best, but the game went from 1 run that inning to multiple runs really fast.

Having a dominant pitcher covered up many faults.

For a while after Gino left we were never recruiting anywhere but Dade/Broward. Not even other parts of Florida. From '08-'11 we signed 4 OOS kids and only 2 made it to campus.


This is considered a historically bad year in So Fla though, so it's easy to focus OOS. Our '14 class is about 90 percent Florida kids right now.
