Defensive adjustments

Really getting played out to be putting all the blame on Dnofrio yes he has to call the plays but it is All Golden's scheme! Golden is a former Defensive Coordinator and if he took over the defense it would be run the exact same way. He believes in the scheme which is why we run it. If anything Golden needs to put his ego aside and hire a defensive guru and let him run his own scheme and defense.

We are in the situation where we need to burn all the current D Playbooks and start from scratch

As a former d coordinator Al has got to be ****ed that his defense can't stop a soul on 3rd downs. We were right there last year and this year I believe we will be there defensively

by running an ameba defense duh. if you have mostly rush specialist personnel that's what you run. our staff never got the memo

1. Stop being obsessed with size and focus more on being light and speedy. The DE's should be 260-265 in the mold of Baraka Atkins/Olivier Vernon, not 280 like Green and Chickillo.

2. Have DT's that rush the passer. There is nothing wrong with a DT that is 295-305. Adding weight to guys that weigh around that much already gives you the Curtis Porters of the world who don't have athleticism to match their weight.

3. Play more man with the corners. We have arguably the best man coverage personal in college.

4. Blitz more, particularly with the Will or safety, like Deon in the bowl game. The personal wasn't quite there last year, but it certainly is now.

5. Don't have DE's cover slot receivers. If we apparently pride ourselves in our substitutions to keep people fresh, I don't see why we can't take out a defensive lineman and put in another corner to cover the slot on specific plays.

6. Cover crossing routes better. See North Carolina, Wake Forest, Louisville, etc..

7. Abandon the two gap scheme. If you're going to play a 3-4, make it 1 gap. You need a Wilfork-esque Nose that requires two blockers if you're going to play that and we do not have anything even close to that. They are banking on Wyche being that big time and his highlights don't really scream the second coming of Vince Wilfork to me. I hope I'm wrong.

8. I'd personally like to see a mix of Cover 2 with the safeties, but that's just me. I'll understand and won't complain if they don't.

9. While still on the size issue, don't overbulk the linebackers. 240 is just fine. Perryman is almost 250, losing his speed, and getting worked by Juwon Young in practice. He was fine where he was.

10. Play Fentress more. If he was 3 inches taller, he'd be a borderline starter and would have had offers from everybody when he was in high school.

Ah yes! Miami fans are such geniuses. Change everything or fire the whole staff is always their stupid answer.

How about being patient and letting the staff get this worked out? I know the village idiots on here think they have it all figured out but let's pretend the coaching staff knows more than they do.

******* mopes...

How many more times do we need to give up 500 yards of offense before people realize that our coaching on defense is a problem?

Yeah because Gaines, Highsmith and company had nothing to do with that, right? As the talent level increases so goes the performance of the defense.

Really not that complicated. But let's keep blaming it on schemezzz. Funny how that scheme works just fine at programs that weren't recently dumpster fires?

For 3 seasons we have ranked near the bottom in ever defensive statistical category. I would not call people village idiots based on the performance of our defense. They are just calling it as they see it.

Talent's been a problem but you're a blind homer on steroids if you don't think our philosophy on defense hasn't had anything to do with our shortcomings.

I gave up trashing coaching staff for Lent, so we have improved the quality of players with this year's class. Oh, maybe somebody could get a hold of Father Leo to organized a Rosary service, or a nondenominational prayer service, for the defense. I would suggest a exorcism, but don't think any players are possessed -- demons tend to play nasty and we haven't seen any of that. Of course there is a good chance that Donna only allows passive demons to be recruited.

Meh. Perrymen and Bush would tear your heart out and feed it to you.
Otherwise pretty good post.

As for adjustments, they were already made by default with the loss of eligibility of Gaines, Green, Highsmith , Rodgers, Cornelius, etc

Who do you anticipate being the answer on our new and improved defense that wasn't here last year? That's the main question for those who think that we're going to make some vast improvement without a fundamental philosophical change. Kirby is a better physical talent than Gaines but he wasn't a better player and showed no signs of being a good linebacker. Is he now the answer? Carter couldn't even get in a game until they tossed him in during the bowl and he did nothing noteworthy. Is he now the answer? Ditto Grace who still needs another 30 lbs to play consistent downs under these guys. Is Wyche going to be better than Porter--do you doubt that Porter would've dominated in junior college? McCord is a good pass rusher but has generally looked perplexed and contributed little as an every down guy. Is it too much to think he would've been further along last year? Bottom line is that all the guys we're blaming were playing because we apparently had nobody better--and we DID have players with more physical talent but they couldn't get in the game.

Does anyone think that freshmen will matter in this defense when the sophomores and juniors can't execute it (by their coaches' admission)? Personally I'm hoping that more talent equals better play but I don't see that taking us terribly far. I don't care whether they fire anyone or not--I care about the results and have little interest in the people. But I really hope they themselves see a need for a fundamental change in how they approach their defense.

There's no reason to believe Carter and Kirby will not both experience a year over year improvement that is extremely common for young, talented players

No reason to believe that a better athlete in the Jack spot will generate better results - Muhammed, McCord

No reason to think that just not having a guy like Highsmith on the field won't fix a few things

No reason to think that a guy like Kamalu won't make a leap after getting more practice and more weight room time under his belt

The defense's overall talent level is set to improve, and there are a number of guys who have shown much improvement on the practice field that can translate to the games
