The Miami Hurricanes entered halftime tied up at 33 with the Providence Friars on Monday night looking to improve on a sloppy first half; the Friars wouldn’t let that happen as they took full control from there coasting to a 76-62 victory.
Providence went on a 13-4 run to open up the second half, while Miami’s offense continued to struggle. The Friars hurt the Hurricanes through their offense while on the other end the Hurricanes failed to get any sort of offense going as they shot 37% from the field including an abysmal 3 point effort going 5 for 27 from the 3 point line. Defensively, the Hurricanes weren’t much better as it was the Friars who couldn’t miss shooting 53% from the field. Ladontae Henton led the way for the Friars as he scored 25 points. Providence also had three other players score in double figures as guard Kris Dunn came off the bench with 15, Tyler Harris with 13 and Carson Desrosiers chipped in with 12.
Offensively for the Hurricanes, Angel Rodriguez led the way with 19 points and 4 assist. Sheldon Mclellan had 17 points with 4 rebounds followed by Tonye Jekiri with a double double of 12 points with ten rebounds.
Analysis: Just a flat out poor performance from the Hurricanes tonight. Offensively, they couldn’t find the rim as they continued to shoot and failed to get any rhythm going. On the defensive side, the Hurricanes failed to stop any inside effort from the Friars making Omar Sherman, Tonye Jekiri and Joe Thomas almost non existent. Thomas and Sherman combined for four rebounds tonight.I mentioned it in the Green Bay recap, but the Hurricanes are going to need Sherman and Thomas to really step up this season for a real chance in ACC competition. The absence of Ivan Cruz Uceda seems to be hurting this team more than expected; The good news is Uceda returns in 3 games against Duke, but the bad news is this team has to improve on both sides of the ball quickly as ACC play nears.
The Hurricanes next opponent is Charleston (5-6) at home on Tuesday, December 30th.
