Al Golden on Joe Rose WQAM- 09/16

Loved it when Golden said he's excited mining for the late blooming and developing senior high school recruits because they are hungrier players. Golden gonna find us another Figs and Kamalu this yr!
 
Great interview!!! Gave some pretty good insight on the mental focus of the team!

- feels the young guys in the two deep deserve to be there and are earning it.
- recruiting; feels that he should have everything wrapped up between thanksgiving and all star games
- feels that some people are wanting Miami to take key south Florida guys (like lane) but he has others rates higher... Mentioned kamalu and figs as examples of guys he had higher than the 3-5 stars
- feels the team is much more disciplined compared to last year and mentally are thinking the right way. Always on time and always where they need to be without direction.
- feels the team defense is much improved compared to last year due to less mental mistakes, and being much stronger/bigger. He said this is the largest reason for the defensive improvement. He says guys are not being "displaced". Holding their ground and allowing LBs to fill gaps.
- said Morris was the key reason we won game... Made great decisions and his poise to lead team was great... Many times he could have tried too hard and caused turnover, etc.


At work, can't provide too many notes, but those are highlights!

Goldens is clearly done, with possibly a rare exception, the prima donnas waiting for the last day to announce their commitment intent.

Why did you single out Lane? There was not even a hint that he was speaking about him.

And why would you use him as an example? We are recruiting him hard.
 
He can't name any players. I liked what Highsmith Sr. wrote him, "Win, learn, win again."

Also liked how he described the defense last year. Young kids making mistakes and light kids getting displaced.

Let's be clear. Golden never named one recruit that he said was overrated. Never once mentioned Lane or anyone else. The only thing Golden said was that his staff needs to trust in its recruiting evaluations, and that he wouldn't trade Kamalu or Figueroa for anyone, even though they were unranked.
 
Great interview. Love the fact that he doesn't care about rankings but much rather cares about staff evaluations and finding the right guys that will work their tails off!
