IMO, not exactly. But, if you've been paying attention in terms of Power 5 athletics, the importance of football within those conferences, and in light of the autonomy vote earlier this year:
1. The Power 5 are playing a different game. See the autonomy vote.
2. The Big 10 and SEC are the big dogs. Their TV deals make sure of that.
3. The Pac 12 is well aware of this and is pretty forward thinking. It almost added Texas and Oklahoma. Although it is unclear how close "almost" really was, at least it was really in there swinging (and planning). Larry Scott ain't sleepin'.
4. The Big 12 has to figure out what to do about the absence of a title game, but maybe that matters less as the playoffs inevitably go to eight teams.
5. Perhaps more significantly, what happens when Texas doesn't get the Longhorn network renewed at its presently ridiculous price? Do they leave then? If they do, hit the music and everybody dance. And then we'll see how valid those grant of media rights provisions really are.
6. The ACC, well if football drives the 5, the ACC needs to get moving. Right now FSU drives the conference and there is nobody else of national significance. That is the single most important reason that Miami could be relevant again. We are a potential national brand. We've shown we can do it. In terms of college football, we can **** near polarize the nation. There is maybe one other school that can do that, and I will not speak its name. We just haven't mattered for more than a decade. Keep ******** around and we won't ever really matter again.
