Cowardly Scheduling

Baylor and KSU have made a killing in Bowl Game revenue with schedules like this....they play no one, *** romp the little guys, win a big game here and there and you are getting recruits and new stadiums....+rep them

If I were king for a day, I would implement mandatory pre-season scheduling for CFB. My plan is to have each of the power 5 conferences (and maybe one more) leave week 2 in their schedule open permanently. Then at the conclusion of each season, these conferences play a game the following season against a rotating conference based on the previous year's final conference standings. It would be very similar to the old ACC - Big East Challenge we used to see in college basketball, except all of the power conferences would participate on a rotating basis.

Something like:

2015:

Week 2's games:

Pac 12 -vs- ACC

Big ten -vs- Big 12

SEC vs- AAC or Mtn. West

Its far from perfect but it would give the voters and playoff committee more real data to work with. And it would be hella fun to watch these games.

That list isn't entirely fair. For instance, the teams in the Big 12 play 9 conference games, so they play 9 power conference teams and 3 non-power conference teams. How is that much different from the majority of the SEC, which plays 8 conference games, 1 power non-conference game, and 3 non-power conference teams?

How did that fare for Baylor or TCU getting into the playoff?

There was a time when VaTech would've easily topped that list. Cupcake city. They've made more of an effort of late to schedule one tough OOC opponent.

This will change. After a couple more years of the playoff system these teams will be forced to basically remove all the D-II schools from their schedules and play almost all Power 5 teams. If they don't they will risk having a great record and not making the playoffs in leiu of the teams that do schedule a bit tougher.

"Washington

2015 Non-Conference Opponents: at Boise State (Sept. 4), vs. FCS Sacramento State (Sept. 12), vs. Utah State (Sept. 19)

2015 is the first season since 1979 that Washington hasn’t technically played at least one non-conference game vs. a team from a Power league. That was the year it faced Wyoming (WAC), Utah (WAC), Fresno State (PCAA) and Pitt (an Independent).

The Huskies get back on track in 2016-17 with a home-and-home with Rutgers. After that it’s another delay, until 2020-21, for a series with Michigan. They do have independent BYU (technically a Power team as per the SEC and ACC) in 2018-19."

Boise State is a way harder opponent than Rutgers...

It wasn't long ago that Golden suggested that we should only play creampuff OOC opponents. Be careful what you point your finger at since if he has his way, we'll be right near the top of that list.

Off the top off my head I remember them recently playing Ohio State, Alabama, and Southern Cal in recent years.

With the playoff system, scheduling weak opponents can hurt you. Ohio State was extremely lucky to get in and win everything.

Not to mention a few trips to the ATL for an early season payday against the $EC.

Playing the Bethune cookmans and fau's of the world needs to stop. There are 12 regular season games, when you load up on 3 or 4 cupcakes it makes the whole thing boring.

look at our schedule Bethune, FAU, Cincy for our OCC. Add to that Duke, Pitt, UVA, UNC and a middling Nebraska team. Suddenly our schedule is garbage. If we were actually good that schedule would be a complete joke. 3 legit games does not make for an exciting season.

This is a big problem across college football, but we are not immune from the weak scheduling.

For some of those programs, I'd argue that it is smart scheduling. They themselves know that they are fringe bowl game programs. Making a bowl game vs. not is EVERYTHING for these guys.
