Comparisons across eras aren’t relevant to me. Of course, with advances in training and nutrition athletes are bigger and faster today, but I don’t care. Rules today are also different. More games are played per season. I can only appreciate how dominant a player was in his era.
The rest is...
I’m also forgetting guys like Willie Davis, Gino Marchetti, and Doug Atkins from the 60s. I prefer to compare how players dominated in their own era. Sacks weren’t an official statistic until the late 70s or early 80s. Team threw less in past eras. Of course, blocking rules were different too...
An argument can be made. I’m including Reggie White, Deacon Jones, Lee Roy Selmon, in my herd of GOATs at DE. Toss in Claude Humphreys, Carl Eller, Howie Long, Jack Youngblood...hitting different eras...
Greg landed in a great situation. A playoff team, legitimate Super Bowl contender, with a young franchise QB. Bruce Smith, HOF player, top 5 all-time at his position, offering support.
Work hard young man.
Reap those rewards.
Happy Greg went to Buffalo, weather not withstanding. Better than being drafted higher by some team like Cincinnati or Detroit, and never sniff a Super Bowl. Yes, his first contract would have paid more higher up but he’ll still make millions in Buffalo and play for a contender.
