    Athlon's top 10 national champs

I put Washington above Nebraska because Washington had a great passing and running game, whereas Nebraska was run-oriented. If someone was able to shut down Nebraska's running game, they weren't going to beat you through the air. But Washington could do both equally well. And Washington could...

I appreciate that Torretta came to Miami, and did the best he could. We won a lot of games with him at quarterback. I appreciate any quarterback that helps us beat FSU. But yeah, his Heisman is embarrassing in hindsight. We stole one there. I don't think 1991 Miami would win a single game...

No, Torretta was most of the reason we lost. Three picks and sub-50% passing. Torretta had no idea what defense Bama was in most of the night. I appreciate what he did for us, but he killed us that game. A lousy performance. Would have been a similar outcome against Washington.

Sure, maybe if we had Joe Montana at quarterback, but with Torretta we lose by 17.

Nope, not with Gino Torretta at quarterback. Ain't happening even if they spotted us 14 points. Alabama game should have told you that.

Nah, we got Nebraska at home, while Washington played them at their place. Objection overruled, case dismissed. Washington was better than us in '91.

1993 Florida St. is the best FSU team I've seen, and they would have raped either the 1999 or 2013 FSU title teams. That is why I don't automatically ding one-loss teams as inferior to undefeated teams. 1996 Florida, when healthy, was the best UF team I've seen. They only lacked depth. 2008...

I agree. Greatest collection of talent in the history of college football. But a team isn't just the players, more importantly, it's the head coach as well. Everything is about coaching. Our recent history illustrates this perfectly. And in all honesty, I would not favor the 2001 Hurricanes...

    Athlon's top 10 national champs

Yes, a night game at Nebraska against a solid 9th ranked Huskers team. Washington got down and then reversed the momentum against them and dominated Nebraska in the 4th quarter. Won by 15, and then famously had Nebraska fans giving them an ovation at the end of the game. Hardly an indictment...

    Athlon's top 10 national champs

I look at three things when judging a team's relative greatness. 1. Head coach. 2. Defense. 3. Quarterback. 2001 Miami had it all except a decent head coach, which is why I rank them below our 1987 team. Do you honestly believe Larry Coker would out-coach Jimmy Johnson and his equally...

Yes, but injured. So they went with the next guy, Billy Joe Hobert, who was almost as good (never lost a college game he started). Not sure why my opinion is controversial enough to get grown men crying to the moderators like little babies.

Most complete and dominating team relative to their peers I've ever seen. Legendary coach, legendary defense, and an excellent quarterback.

I personally have 1991 Washington at no. 1 and 1995 Nebraska at no. 2. 1987 Miami would be somewhere between 3 and 5.
