In theory, Illinois is probably the 2nd toughest opponent on the non-conference schedule and they won in overtime in their first game of the year. Here are some highlights:

In fairness, Miami was not expected to win the ACC nor ranked in the top 10 going into the season. You make a valid point but preseason ranking does raise expectations of a team.

Should have had USF on the schedule this season to boast our non-conference schedule. Outside of Illinois and Florida, our non-conference schedule only has two NCAA tournament teams on it unless Temple and UCF exceed expectations.

Good points. I feel even better now about Miami beating Temple and UCF as I now know I am not the only one thinking in that perspective. Either UCONN or Xavier would be a good game for Miami, especially if Miami is playing them in the Championship game in Charleston.
