Wright intrigued by opportunity to play for hometown Miami

The Canes continued to expand their board at linebacker last week by offering 2020 LB Khaya Wright, who plays both linebacker and defensive end for South Miami Senior. Miami defensive coordinator Blake Baker was the one that extended Wright the good news over the phone, saying he saw Wright fitting best as a linebacker at UM.

“He was talking about how I would fit in their scheme and how I would be living in new apartments on campus,” Wright said. “He was telling me how I needed to build a real relationship with the coaches.”

Miami’s coaching staff took notice of Wright after a productive junior season for the Cobras, as he racked up 45 tackles, 14 sacks, 27 TFL, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 TD in 2018. Now with an opportunity to stay local, Wright is excited by the chance to play in front of his home crowd.

“I mean, it feels great to know I have a chance at representing my hometown in front of all my friends and family,” Wright said.

The Hurricanes have now shot way up in Wright’s mind, as the 6-3 205 pound prospect says Miami is “definitely in my top 4.” Syracuse, UVA, and UCF make up the rest of his top group.

Wright originally got on campus for a junior day event this spring, but a return trip this summer is on tap for Wright to continue building a relationship with the UM staff. As a two-sport athlete for South Miami, Wright is hoping to find a school that will let him pursue both of his passions in baseball and football; the rest of his top 4 will allow him to do just that, but it is unknown if he will able to do that at Miami as of now.

“I’m probably going to make a decision after the football season,” Wright said. “In a school, I’m looking for the ability to do my major, the chance to play both baseball and football, and my relationship with the coaches.”

South Miami finished their 2018 season at 8-3, falling to St. Thomas Aquinas in the first round of the playoffs. Wright was pleased with his performance but feels there is more upside to his game yet to be unveiled.

“I think I did good, but I could’ve done better,” Wright said.

How’s the kid at playing baseball?

I know the baseball team is finally turning it back around and getting back to being a dominate team again don’t think they would take anyone... even though he would never count as a baseball player on scholly due to football superseding baseball

I coached against this kid that last few years. His older brother is a QB that went to Independence CC in Kansas (Last Chance U No. 2). Kid is good, very long. Hopefully he’ll go by KW or something in college lol

Great quickness, tremendous motor and nose for the ball. I could see him developing into a very good LB at this level.

Technique sound stud , keeps feet under himself, makes contact looks ball , lateral movement exceptional and eye to hand reaction instinctive.

All natural with NO thinking , thinking kills a ball player , get his ball player ASAP.

This kids tape is really, really solid. The only negative I see is he plays a little high coming off the snap and when he engages. At the same time, he's strong and athletic AF because he's still able to shed those blocks. Those measurables and production numbers are very impressive. How is this guy unranked? He was just offered by Gtech, too.

I’m sure with the right nutrition and weight room he can be a hue

I heard about this kid, he might blow up in the rankings a little over the summer.

I did not connect Antoine Wright to him. Good tip. Antoine is a good dude.

I like this kid a lot, long armed frame, quick & explosive off the snap, pure speed, naturally athletic (played WR before moving to rush end) & very good natural pass rush ability.

I definitely think he's a take in this class regardless of his ranking, you take a flyer on a kid like this & let him develop after a year or 2 in the S&C program, he has very high upside.

In his original offer thread I compared him to a former Diaz OLB from Midd Tenn St Erik Walden & another former Stroud player from CSU & Akron Cap Capi. Both of them were rush ends as well.

My only question is the evaluation of him as a standup LB instead of DE, I guess they see him as a Pass rushing LB & won't make him drop back in coverage too often, but other than that I'm all in with taking this kid in this class.
