With ACC play on the horizon, Williams is focused on CMU

After Wednesday’s practice, redshirt freshman QB Jarren Williams talked about how he felt he took another step forward in his first career win, a 63-0 drubbing of Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.

“(The confidence) has always been there,” Williams said. “But I’m more comfortable in the offense than I was in game 1, have a better understanding of where to go with the ball.

“It was a huge learning experience for me the first game, I had a lot of mistakes. I feel like I’ve gotten better with that, but am still far from where I want to be. Everyday [Dan Enos is] correcting me on things I can get better at.”

Williams wasn’t the only Hurricane to celebrate his first career win, though. After beating BCU for the first win of his career on Saturday, head coach Manny Diaz was presented the game ball by the team in the locker room, led by DL coach Todd Stroud, and Williams saw it as a special moment for the team.

“It was a really good moment for the team, we’re working really hard, play for him,” Williams said. “To get his first win as head coach, there’s a lot of excitement around the locker room.”

The Canes only committed a season-low 5 penalties against the Wildcats last weekend, while also protecting the ball for zero turnovers.

“We’re really just playing clean, limiting the mistakes - penalties from missed assignments, just limiting those mental errors. We grew in that area a lot.”

Williams did not throw a pick vs. BCU and, in fact, Williams is one of only 4 ACC starting QB’s that have yet to throw an INT this season.

“That’s something I’ve always kind of had, I’ve never thrown a lot of interceptions even in high school,” Williams said. “I try to protect the ball as best I can, put us in the best position to score points. If it’s not open, I won’t throw it, but I am aggressive at the same time, know when to take shots and when not to.”

With the bulk of the ACC schedule on tap after this weekend’s game against Central Michigan, Williams feels the sense of urgency for this young team has never been higher.

“We’re learning how to really win, and when we do win, learning how to win from the win,” Williams said. “We learn from mistakes, from the loss. Even this game coming up, we have to learn from the win - focus on one game at a time, can’t jump ahead and look at the ACC championship. It’s just locking in, everybody will be focused on this week.”

Check it out my Cane Brothers...

IMO... this why we should play more out of conference games like these in the future... I know, I know some of ya'll don't want to hear it but it actually helps us in the long run. The game of football mostly consists of strategy and planning. FROM TOP TO BOTTOM! Chess not checkers family! ( To reiterate what some of the players and Coach Manny stated in some articles " WE HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO WIN") - He gets it. To me even if it means playing teams like these for awhile . Winning creates a natural habitat of good attitudes. This how Bama started their blueprint when Saban took over along with other other coaches at universities. (Someone look into that if your big on statistics? ) I love college football! More so then the NFL. I watch all the teams play not just OUR CANES. Not only do I watch but i study the parameters of the game . Reviewing film and all... For example, one team to study. Look what Boise St. did when they had Coach Chris Peterson. Some other teams caught on and now playing a weak OOC schedule. (see UCF and others) Boise st game plan was to beat teams who they supposed to beat and schedule 1 hard out of Conf game. Which leads 50, 50 toss up on any given SAT day but what set them over the edge was the Winning attitude that was already instilled from wining a lot of games. So when they played a tough team in the bowl games or OOC they felt that they can take them and most of the times teams like these did.

Football is also a game of sociology ... it really is. I didn't realize myself until a brother studied it.
It's not about who you really play everyone it's about surviving in the months of NOV and DEC. #BOOM!

Point made.... since last game every player in interviews has been like these SORT OF SPEAK. So business like minded . It's different at least it seems to me. Even if was BCC. It's like they feel the hump is off their backs now and they are looking to win EVERY game ONE at a time.

THE STORM IS COMING.

- Slow starts
- 3rd down conversion %
- Red zone scoring
- Lack of scoring output to match time of possession

If Jarren can’t overcome these flaws we are going to lose another 4 games minimum and this season will be the beginning of the end for Coach Diaz.

One thing you mention, that I have always believed we miss most about the Big East days is the easy wins and the confidence that gives a team.

Am I the only one that has some concerns about JW, still? He was not very good early in that last game. Getting the ball out late, still missing the read at times, even on plays that ended up being a success, it was because of junk ball after Jarren himself broke the play by not throwing it when it was open.

I am also concerned that he seems to consistently stare down his receiver. As defenses get film on him and adjust, he is going to have to stay ahead of them, or he's going to have turnover issues at some point. If I can see it on the live feed after six rum and cokes, you know Bronco Mendenhall is gonna pick up on it.

I'm not saying he's a problem, I'm optimistic about him, and I don't expect perfection, but even our resident film junkie analysts seem to be downplaying the concerns that I know they see.

Being better than the position was last year is not enough. He's got a lot of improvement that he needs to make, and fast.

Without this turning into a "Jarren bashers vs. Jarren defenders" thing, am I the only one who sees this? Am I wrong in the way I'm looking at it? I feel like we constantly crown our guys after a few good games, ****, I think even Ivins and that other guy, Lake I think, declared like it was a fact the other day that JW would be leaving for the NFL early. Seems crazy to me that this is such a generally accepted feeling around here after just three starts, and oh by the way, 1-2.

Hes 3 games in his career playing meaningful action, he still needs to gain experience in a number of situations and that will come with him being more comfortable in real game action . I don’t think anyone is crowning him but he’s clearly better than qb play we received last year and it’s no where near close. With that being said I’m sure He knows he needs to continue to improve and with enos coaching him he definitely won’t let him rest on his laurels though, no question about that.

You look at some of the throws he made against UiF and UNC and he absolutely isn’t one of those “game manager” types that just doesn’t lose the game for you by not turning it over.

The game just needs to slow down a bit more but he made some very aggressive throws over the first few weeks

How old is Jarren, the dude hairline is that of a 40 year old

He’s been the first to admit he’s still got a lot of work to do. I think we’ve all seen improvement in every game and if he continues on that path, I’m pretty confident a lot of the issues you mention will be cleaned up.

Is this season about admiring Jarren Williams progress regardless if we win or lose, or is the expectation still for him to win games against teams that we obviously out talent at most positions?

This is exactly what happened in 2014 with freshman Kaaya. We went 6-7 with a 2000 yard tailback, #14 in total defense, and 7 players drafted into the NFL, and all people were talking about was how great Kaaya was, how good he was going to be, and how he was a future #1 pick. The answer to your question is yes, if we suck and go 6-7, people will still admire JW and he will hold no responsibility for any team failures.

It’s all Jarren fault on why we are 0-2 huh? Smh. Quit feeding trolls, And why are you expecting this season to playout like that again. Already counting losses to games that haven’t even been played. Pussified *** fan base man

I still think this club can win 10 Games. As far as Jarren goes I’m still recovering from the 2 Ls. Bethune was a great showing, UNC was as well.

So for me this season is definitely about Jarrens development. He’s doing some things that Kaaya can’t do.

I want to see if his the “it” factor. Right now I’d say no. Seems like he will be a great college QB regardless of “it” factor.

Some guys year in year out just have “it”

Johnny Manziel had “it”
Winston had “it”
Mariota had “it”
Luck had “it”
Bradford has “it”
Tebow had “it”
Mayfield had more of the “it” factor than Kyler Murray did IMO.

He may not have it. I still feel like you can literally see Jarren thinking still. It’s only 1/4 of his first year. I’ll be curious where he is in October and November.

Lots to play for. A shot to take on Clemson and gauge exactly where #TNM is.

(I’ve changed my mind on wanting to play Clemson. I absolutely hope UVA drops another ACC game after we beat them in route to the ACCCG)

Crazy things happen in college ball and nothings guaranteed Miami could “shock the world” and ruin Clemson’s post season plans. Depending on how the playoff race is shaping up by then.

TEAM LOSES AND TEAM WINS.

Definitely not on J will. It’s on everyone including coaches.

I’d like to see Miami still push 30-35 ppg in this era.
