After Wednesday’s practice, redshirt freshman QB Jarren Williams talked about how he felt he took another step forward in his first career win, a 63-0 drubbing of Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
“(The confidence) has always been there,” Williams said. “But I’m more comfortable in the offense than I was in game 1, have a better understanding of where to go with the ball.
“It was a huge learning experience for me the first game, I had a lot of mistakes. I feel like I’ve gotten better with that, but am still far from where I want to be. Everyday [Dan Enos is] correcting me on things I can get better at.”
Williams wasn’t the only Hurricane to celebrate his first career win, though. After beating BCU for the first win of his career on Saturday, head coach Manny Diaz was presented the game ball by the team in the locker room, led by DL coach Todd Stroud, and Williams saw it as a special moment for the team.
“It was a really good moment for the team, we’re working really hard, play for him,” Williams said. “To get his first win as head coach, there’s a lot of excitement around the locker room.”
The Canes only committed a season-low 5 penalties against the Wildcats last weekend, while also protecting the ball for zero turnovers.
“We’re really just playing clean, limiting the mistakes - penalties from missed assignments, just limiting those mental errors. We grew in that area a lot.”
Williams did not throw a pick vs. BCU and, in fact, Williams is one of only 4 ACC starting QB’s that have yet to throw an INT this season.
“That’s something I’ve always kind of had, I’ve never thrown a lot of interceptions even in high school,” Williams said. “I try to protect the ball as best I can, put us in the best position to score points. If it’s not open, I won’t throw it, but I am aggressive at the same time, know when to take shots and when not to.”
With the bulk of the ACC schedule on tap after this weekend’s game against Central Michigan, Williams feels the sense of urgency for this young team has never been higher.
“We’re learning how to really win, and when we do win, learning how to win from the win,” Williams said. “We learn from mistakes, from the loss. Even this game coming up, we have to learn from the win - focus on one game at a time, can’t jump ahead and look at the ACC championship. It’s just locking in, everybody will be focused on this week.”
