Manny Diaz Football Camp Week 2 Recap

Manny Diaz Football Camp Week 2 Recap

Matthew_Suero
Another week of the Manny Diaz football camps has come and gone and I was there for most of it. Here is the weekend recap.

Friday

The biggest storyline from Friday has to be the notable visitors. 2021 5-star QB Jake Garcia arrived on campus for a two-day visit Friday and was promptly met by 2021 Miami commits Laurence Seymore and Romello Brinson. Brinson was attached at the hip with Garcia most of the day and introduced Garcia to a number of current players.

There were also two official visitors on campus this weekend, 2020 LB Corey Flagg and 2020 OLB/DE Romello Height. Height looks the part of a defense end. He is tall, long, and has a good frame to put on weight. I did not see Flagg during his visit, but the coaching staff was hinting at a commitment from him on twitter Sunday.

The biggest news coming out of the actual camp on Friday was the offering of 2022 defensive linemen teammates Daniel Lyons and Dante Anderson from Miami Southridge. Lyons is the bigger of the two and will most likely play on the interior of the defensive line at the next level while Anderson is probably destined to be a defensive end. Both looked very impressive physically.

Saturday

Despite not even participating in the actual camp, Jake Garcia stole the show on Saturday. His private workout with Dan Enos drew a large crowd of coaches, media, and general observers. Garcia was throwing against air, but there is no doubt that he can sling it.

Pace’s Shemar Stewart was the most impressive player in the big man camp on Saturday. The rising sophomore said he now weighs 240 pounds and stands 6’4’’. He looks as if he could be one of the best in the country two years from now.

Western High School won the tournament. Recent American Heritage transfer James Williams had multiple interceptions throughout the day and looked strong. The UM staff was all over him during the camp.

Sunday

I was not able to stay past the morning session on Sunday, and while I was there I spent most of my time observing the offensive line. The trio of Issiah Walker, Lloyd Willis, and Khristopher Love got a private lesson from Coach Barry.

Issiah Walker- Walker, the highest rated of the group, was probably the best of the trio on Sunday, although far from perfect. Walker at times struggled with his hand placement, but his footwork is special. Also, he is naturally very strong and his strength helped him win some reps where he did not have the best technique.

Lloyd Willis- Willis is tall (6’7’’) and long with not a lot of bad weight right now. Willis really struggled with quicker defensive linemen on Sunday and also needs work on his hand placement.

Khristopher Love- Of the three, Love is the only one who will play inside at the next level. Since he is most likely a guard, his height at 6’3’’ is not much of an issue. Love also struggled with some faster and quicker D-linemen, but when he got his hand on someone it was over. Love is extremely strong and was throwing around some big linemen. Love is listed at 315 pounds so he could easily lose some weight and gain more mobility. This is someone Miami should seriously consider offering.

Those camps were loaded and sounded like they were received really well locally. That IPF saved our butts once again. These camps were a great tuneup for Paradise!

So is the recruiting strategy for the OL to get really heavy dudes that are naturally strong and slim them down to make them Guards, and take lighter kids with good footwork and bulk them up into tackles? It makes sense- its incredibly hard for us to land a 5 star true OT (like Leatherwood) since those kids get paid big time.

We have to put in the work and build these young prospects into steely-eyed killers, Parris Island-style.

That Love kid is a great alternative to Denis. Feel confident Feeley could get him in great shape.
From film I've seen If Love is ready to TRULY commit, would take him and nicely explain to Denis that commitment is a mutual term. When he decommitted he lost his guaranteed spot and can find another college that he can now commit to. Sick of SoFla kids thinking that an offer is forever, but a committment means only until a percieved better offer arrives.

Good stuff. This just reinforces for me that if we could keep more top guys home we'd dominate CF. Maybe the NCAA allows sec bags to keep us from getting most of the locals. I can't even get excited about the Southridge boys or Stewart because you know by 2022 they gone be all up in their heads.

I agree. We gotta stop equivalently being friend zoned by these recruits and this seems like a perfect opportunity to step away from that. If Love shows out at Paradise, offer him and press for the commit. And if he does, then you tell Denis to kick rocks.

Thats how ive been feeling on Denis from the beginning. I dont think he has the skill level to be decommitting and playing the game
