JaQuan Johnson tight-lipped about recruitment

JaQuan Johnson has been a known commodity since his freshman year in high school. The Killian star is ready to enter his final spring football before heading to the next level.

“I throw all of the hype and rankings out the window when it’s time to play. I’m still working like nobody knows my name and that’s how I approach it everyday on the field and in the classroom,” said Johnson.

Something that comes with the territory of being an elite prospect is having to deal with constant calls from college coaches.

“I’m tired of it already, but I’ve kind of gotten used to it. I understand why schools want me so I’ll just be evaluating everything.”

Despite most pegging him as a strong lean to Miami, the safety prospect is trying to keep people on their toes.

“I’ve been visiting plenty of schools, so it’s really no school that is sticking out. Everybody has a chance. Once my family and I take all of my visits and talk about everything, I’ll make my decision.”

Johnson was seen throwing up the “U” in his All-Dade picture a couple months ago. He explained how that came about.

“They told me to pose for the picture so I did plenty of poses and that was the one they chose. They’ve been my favorite team since I was a kid and I still like them a lot.”

A major factor in his recruitment also looks like it will be a potential “package deal” with close friend and fellow elite defensive back prospect, Tim Irvin.

“Me and Tim talk about playing with each other all the time. I want to play with him and he wants to play with me. In the end, if there is something better for us then we will go our separate ways, but we want to play together.”

Something working in Miami’s favor is Johnson’s relationship with current Hurricane Deon Bush. The two have known each other for years dating back to the optimist level.

“Every time I see him, he tells me to come to Miami and to put us back on the map. He jokes about it with me, but tells me to make the best decision for myself and he said he will support it wherever I go.”

Johnson is now weighing 185 pounds and hopes to get to 190 by the time his season begins.

I want this kid as bad as any kid in the 2015 class.

Pete, It seems like these kids go from loving the U all their lives to being non commital an everyone has a chance almost overnight. Will there ever be another Duke Johnson again or does every elite recruit now have an advocate in their ear telling them what to say. Does this kid have a Genron or is this just family?

Win and they'll come.

Its not all about someone being in their ear, most elite recruits want to go to a winning team and or where elite coaching/players are.

JaQuan is still a heavy lean and everyone knows that. Look at this story like the Da'Vante Phillips one. He says he is not favoring anybody but everyone knows FSU leads for him (Phillips). Same thing here with Miami and Johnson.

I got a feeling Johnson, Cronkite, Irvin might pull the trigger at the spring game. Johnson more likely then the other 2..

Kid is taking his time because he wants to do it right.

I respect that.

If the kid says he's been a Cane fan all his life, then that tells you his family and friends were probably Canes fans too. Most kids are fans of the school their parents or family indoctrinates them into. Given we're recruiting him hard, he's a Cane fan, his buddy (Irvin) has lineage and Bush has some influence, what more can you ask? Can't blame anyone if we don't land him. He just wanted out. Sometimes you got to accept that it wasn't a lack or incapacity of the staff, kid wanted to be some place else.

This class has a lot of play makers in it I love it

The kid wants to enjoy the recruiting process. That is the way it is now, all the wining and dinning. He even has an explanation for flashing the U in a pic.

Let him enjoy the process and make a sound decision like KC and Sony did last year where tehy commit and never waver

That would be one **** of a package deal!

This kid isn't acting like some of these other divas and I respect that.

Kid is going to be a Cane. Enjoy the recruiting now and when you're done commit.

Nice comparison by Pete. This is def like the Phillips story. Cane all the way, not matter of if but when he commits.

He has always loved UM but with all these schools in the country coming at him he has to do whats right and check out these schools before committing. Everyone around him for the most part want him to stay home so that is in our favor. I know we all want him as well as a few others to commit now, **** the staff is the same way to get the momentum going, but lets let a kid do their homework and then realize Miami is the best place for them and then commit. I for one hate when a kid commits and then still takes all of these visits.
