Fall Camp Intel: Defense

"The inconsistency that Feagles showed last season continues to rear it’s ugly head in practices. He routinely trades great punts for terrible punts on Greentree."

Man, of everything mentioned, this scares me the most.

@Stefan Adams Is Miami recruiting a HS punter or looking at a transfer this class, just in case Feagles proves himself not to be up to the challenge again this season? Feel like he needs more competition than walk-ons (even at a position where walk-ons succeed maybe more than other positions).

God **** you Robert Knowles, god **** you

He needs to strictly be on special teams

I'm not so sure Bethel is a penetrating type. He's known as one of the strongest guys on the team. I never saw him as a quick first step penetrator in his reps last season. I always saw him more as a gap integrity, hold my point of attack while pushing forward type. I expect Bethel to be solid yet unspectacular. Personally, I think the fact that he has held off Tito and Ford has to be looked at as somewhat of a positive with regards to what he brings to the table.

I get that he doesn't have the listed weight everyone wants, but I'll take a fist that weighs 285 pounds any day over an open hand that weighs 315.

That is more so what I meant. We have 2 sub 300 pounders in the middle of our defense. We got GUTTED at times last year with a 310 pounder in the middle, so you understand where my concern is coming from?

Absolutely understand. I'm just hoping that Bethel is in that position because he is up for the task. I've seen sub-300 pound guys hold the point of attack and perform their job better than 300+ guys before. It's about more than weight. I like my fist vs. open-hand example to characterize it. But, I do need to see it first hand from Bethel before I'd feel comfortable. TBD . . .

Jhavonte Dean better be ready for Dallas...
Also happy to have DeeJay back there returning punts, he seems very intelligent...which is critical in punt returns

Agreed, intelligence is paramount in the return game. A lot of people **** on Braxton because he fair caught the ball more often than not, but the reality is that most people on this board would rather us be safe than sorry.

Not saying Braxton always made the right decision — there were clearly times he had room to move and played it too safe. But, with that said, he never cost us, and that’s important to point out.

Stefan, Thanks for these great write-ups the last 2 days. I’ve watched a ton of Miami highlight videos the past couple weeks, but the info you provided has been second to none! Appreciate all you do

Never cost us like Benjamin ran around like an idiot and lost yards on a lot of returns.

Scrap Martin and Knowles next year if he is a liability again this year. Jack Specier is the other punter (Transfer from Florida). He is on high alert if Feagles sucks again.

Feagles better get his act together. Field position will be very important against LSU.
If not, we’ll have to play like I do in Madden and go for it every fourth down. (Probably why I’m horrible at the game)

I like showing confidence in your players, but there's no excuse for not signing or bringing in another punter as a transfer or walk on after the season Feagles had last year. Shanked punts can really turn momentum against you & can cost you games in the bigger picture.

Only saying anything because I've read it several times now, but since when is a will linebacker an inside linebacker?

In Diaz's defense the WLB is a more similar role to the MLB than it is the SLB. WLB/MLB are generally aligned inside the tackle area while the SLB (and now 'striker') line up wider, generally between the OT and slot receiver. Grouping the WLB with the MLB just makes more sense in how those players are used, so inside LB.

I know weight isn’t the only factor but like you said, I need to see more of Bethel in a full time starting role inside before I declare he can actually hold up inside. I guess we will see soon because I fully expect LSU to try to bully us inside early and often.

How about we see Knowles and Feagles in actual games this year before deciding they are terrible..

I really hope them 2 and Rosier have strong seasons so the haters can eat crow.
