Dayall Harris emerges as screen weapon

Miami receiver Dayall Harris led the team with five receptions against Appalachian State last game. He was particularly dangerous in the screen game, where him and Brad Kaaya got into a nice rhythm.

“They just couldn’t stop it,” Harris said. “If you put the linebacker over the top, it’s like a run/pass option. So if the linebacker is over the top, we run the ball. If the linebacker is in the box, we throw the little bubble screen. It’s like an extended run.”

The Canes wide receivers have been a big part of the team’s success in the running game, as well as with screens.

“It’s definitely something that Coach Dugans preaches every day. He tells us every day when we watch film that we have to be more physical,” Harris said. “When the first game came, he started seeing we could block.”

“That’s just something we take pride in as a receivers group. We plan on keeping it up,” he said.

The JUCO transfer has been pleased with his unit’s performance three games into the season. He was also happy with how the team responded after what he considered a lackluster showing in week two.

“We’ve been able to get everything we’ve wanted. The second game, we had a little problem with the passing game against FAU, but we had open players,” Harris said. “We came back and got right against Appalachian State.”

The Hurricanes have been able to create balance in the backfield between Mark Walton and Joseph Yearby. Harris believes that the receivers group has done the same and he explained the advantage that it gives them.

“I’ve been getting open. Brad has his reads and he throws to the open man. When I’m getting open, Stacy is open, or Malcolm is open. It’s not a big deal – like I’m not down that I’m not getting the ball because I know my time is coming,” Harris said.

“There’s not a favoritism of who gets the ball. Whoever is open, gets the ball,” he added.

Harris graded his personal performance early in the season.

“I would say I’ve been doing pretty well. I wouldn’t give myself an A because the competitor that I am knows I could do a lot better. I would give myself like a B.”

love how richt predicates the WR screen game on rhythm and timing. so much more effective when Dayall starts the route in motion. also enjoy how relentless Richt is with the play calling last game - if the defense can't stop a play, keep running it. no need to save or "hide" the play for later in the game. savage

Yep. He doesn't overthink or over complicate things. This will only improve as our OL in the future fills up with studs.

Watching the replays this season(with emphasis on the WHY of a resurgent run game), it is very noticeable the WR group and their aggressive (and penalty free) downfield blocking.

It appeared to be a point of emphasis made by Dugans during the training camps and its paying off. Those athletes are getting after their man and making them non-factors in the play.

Go Canes. Unleash ****.

Really enjoying the down field blocking, noticeably better effort by the players..

It feels so good to finally have a competent coaching staff. Just read those quotes. You haven't heard real X's and O's talk like that out of our players in years.

It's rediculous to say, but for the first time in years the players get what they're supposed to do and why.

Well I hope we don't use this stagegy about FSU cause they have actual speed on the corners. However screens against smaller, slower and weaker competition is just imposing you will on them physically. Let's see how they work against a team that matchups up physically.

That is when Kaaya should pump fake and let the Dbs jump the route. Then throw it deep to Coley or Richards for clear sailing down the sideline.

Richt is an exceptional play caller. He is setting up the for that in the next few games with the way his play calling has been lately. Get the run pass option on film then hit them with the fake wideout screen to deep ball

I worry about that too. While I am not a big fan of bubble screens, I don't mind when they work. But if you over do it against any team with speed and talent they will take one the other way on you, unless they are coached by our beloved former HC and boyfriend. On the other hand, a nice fake after a couple successes could result in big play downfield. I would like Mark to get the ball to that huge fullback for some running plays, maybe a counter or draw. We haven't seen much since the one TD catch. 280 pounds and do a lot of violence on dbs if it gets into secondary a couple times. I grew up watching dbs running AWAY from the Zonk. He would turn toward them to make a hit on them. Since we now have a fullback again, I would like to use him some.

FSU DB's have been getting exposed all season. Kayaa had over 400 yds last season In Tally against a better FSU Defense he will have another great game. Just have to execute. I don't see any defense on our schedule that should be able to stop our offense

Yeah unc has one of the worst rushing defense in the country and Pitt has the worst passing defense in the country

Probably not a good idea to give away the game plan!
