Couch in line for big role as a freshman

After arriving in Coral Gables over the summer, freshman CB Te’Cory Couch has been one of the standouts in fall camp and has earned praise from the coaching staff for his preparedness for the college level and his advanced technique.

“It’s been pretty good,” Couch said of his first few months in college. “I love everything - being home and being here with these players, it feels like home. The hardest part has been learning the defense, but I’m getting more comfortable every day.”

Now that second team corner Nigel Bethel has transferred away from the team, there is even more opportunity for early playing time at corner this season with only 5 scholarship players left at the position. What does the staff tell Couch he needs to improve on to see the field more often?

“Really, the coaches just tell me to keep doing what I’m doing because I’ve been doing pretty well, but they just say keep working,” Couch said. “I feel my play has been good, could be better. But that’s why we come out here to practice, to get better.”

While he played his senior season at Chaminade at around 150 pounds, Couch worked hard over the offseason to put on mass and now stands at 5-10, 167. While he said he’s not quite at his goal weight, he is pleased with the size he’s gained so far.

“Actually, my plan was to get bigger,” Couch said. “I want to try to get to 175 before October.”

Going up against the talent Miami has at WR each practice has helped Couch adjust to the college game and there has been one receiver in particular that he has daily battles against.

“They’re all pretty good, but I like going against Brian Hightower,” Couch said. “He’s a different kind of challenge – he’s bigger, stronger, and I like the challenge.”

With his college debut just days away, Couch says he is more focused on UM’s defense being the best version of themselves than anything the Florida Gators’ offense will be doing on August 24th.

“My expectations are for us to be us, play our game,” Couch said. “We already go against the best receivers every day, so everybody else shouldn’t really be a challenge if we play our best game.”

Maybe a diamond in the rough.

LoL, this **** aint no diamond in the rough, he been a diamond playing rough for a long time, while alot of these bandwagon UM fans started jumping up and down like something big happened when Christian williams committed, and no doubt, williams being here is a good thing, but te'cory was already committed since the summer of 18. It was comical and sad at the same time watching people type dumb **** after williams committed saying things like "finally coach rumph got one" and when i asked the questio, what's the difference between te'cory being a 4star and williams being a 4star, CRICKETS.

Just know this, couch is our roscoe parrish but on the defensive side of the ball. The more he matures physically, imma say this, God Willing barring health, one of them corner spots is gone be his, he's an old school db, top notch cover skills, real football speed, and top notch run defending db. He's the type of player you damyum near dont have to coach, self made!
