2020 ATH Davis comes off Miami visit, plans to return in summer

2020 Trinity Christian Academy ATH Fred Davis has 8 early offers so far, including one from the Miami Hurricanes. Davis grew up watching the Canes as a Florida boy and was thrilled to have a scholarship to “The U”.

“Coach Todd Hartley came to the school and offered me,” Davis said. “I’m just blessed that I received an offer from Miami because I always grew up watching Miami football, it’s a school with tradition. I’m from Florida and it’s just a blessing to receive an offer from a school in Florida, especially Miami.”

As one of the best athletes on his team, Davis plays on both sides of the field for his Trinity Christian team. It was his big sophomore season that got the attention of the Canes and others.

“I did pretty good. (On defense) I had 32 tackles and 4 interceptions with 4 pass break-ups,” Davis said. “We didn’t do like we wanted to, finished 2 games away from states. We are definitely winning states next year.”

So, where does Davis prefer to play at the next level?

“Whatever the team needs,” he said. “(Miami) offered me as a defensive back.”

TE coach Todd Hartley and CB coach Mike Rumph have made Davis’ recruitment a tag-team effort, and the gridiron star has formed a close connection with the two Canes coaches.

“I talk with coach Hartley and coach Mike Rumph,” said Davis. “Our relationship is strong, I can talk to them about anything, not just football.”

Growing up in Florida and always being exposed to UM isn’t the only reason for Davis’ interest in the Canes. He cites the academic appeal of Miami and the ability to come back to the program in the future as features that draw him to Coral Gables.

“The players and the coaches,” Davis said. “Also the education, it’s a private college so it’s not so big, so I can have one-on-one’s with some of my teachers if I need it. Also, I can see myself playing there and if I end up going to the NFL, Miami would be a place I would always come back to.”

A few weeks back, Davis went to Coral Gables to check out campus and see if Miami could be his future home. He even got a bit of a personal touch, as he was the lone prospect on an unofficial visit at the time.

“I visited Miami 2 weeks ago. I loved it,” Davis said. “I toured everything: the facilities, classrooms, and I ate and had lunch with the coaches. I was the only recruit there. I’m going to visit Miami again soon, probably in the summer.”

When talking top groups and leaders, Davis has some top-tier schools in mind, but it’s the Canes that he hears from the most.

“Well, right now, (my top group is) Miami, Alabama, and Florida,” Davis said. “Clemson, LSU, Auburn, Georgia also but I haven’t been offered by them yet. Right now, Miami is recruiting me the hardest.”

Davis, who currently lists himself at 6’2” 174 pounds, won’t be making a quick decision like some of his other classmates. He’s enjoying being recruited and will take things slow until the right school becomes clear.

“Right now, I’m just enjoying the process,” Davis explained. “What I’m looking for in a school is a school that I will get early playing time, a good education, good environment, and where I can see myself coming back there after football.”
