2015 DE Patchan Talks Miami Commitment

Tito Benach
It wasn’t a very hard decision for 2015 Freedom (Fla.) defensive end Scott Patchan when he committed to Miami last weekend, but the timing was perfect.

“To be honest, with Miami they were a favorite and everyone was saying they were, but there was a few things I had to get done first. I had to have my brother and ask for his thoughts on his college experience because he’s had the experience and I had to ask questions.”

When asked for a reason behind the commitment, Patchan cited Miami’s camaraderie as the best aspect.

“Every school talks about a family feel and I’ve been to a few of the schools; I’ve been to USF, I’ve been to FIU, I’ve been to UCF and I can really say that Miami feels like a family. You walk into the locker room after games and their are guys that don’t even known you coming up to you and asking what’s up. It gives you a bond with them and on top of that the coaches care about you.”

The 6’5 225 pound end prospect spoke a little bit about his own expectations for when he arrives in Coral Gables.

“With the scheme, I’ll have a chance to come in an possibly start my freshman year. I don’t plan on redshirting, I plan on competing hard and earning a spot on that defense and contribute my freshman year.”

While the commitment is solid according to Patchan, he still plans to use his official visits, but assures ‘Canes fans there’s no worry.

“I’ll probably take visits here and there, I don’t see myself flipping. It’s a solid commitment and I’ll take a few of my official visits, I don’t even know who I think I’m going to see.”

The Freedom high school product got the opportunity to watch the Hurricanes in action this past weekend during their spring game and gave his thoughts on the team.

“I thought the defense has improved tremendously since last year. I thought (Anthony) Chickillo did well, I watched him a lot. Denzel Perryman, wow he had some big hits; Tyriq McCord did well also. Seeing all that was good, and the running back #44 (Walter Tucker) was running some dudes over, so him and Duke Johnson could make a great 1-2 punch.”

After analyzing the team, Patchan gave his expectations for Miami’s 2014 season.

“I think they’re going to try and improve in the win and loss column from last year and they’re going to try and compete for a BCS bowl game.”

As far as a message for ‘Cane fans, Patchan gave his pledge.

“I’m ready to be a ‘Cane and I’m ready to bring ‘The U’ back. It’s already back I should say and I’m excited to be apart of the green and orange and represent Miami.”

My son went to Freedom and played a year with his Brother Matt before he transferred to Armwood. Scott began his football with the New Tampa Wildcats where I was undefeated for 4 years as a coach (toot toot!). His dad a former Cane is a nice guy. I'm pulling for Scott to be outstanding. He has the desire.

You still Coach the New Tampa Wildcats? What age group? You all play a team out of Frederick, MD in Orlando at the ESPN event this past season?

when i pulled up to the spring game......the whole Patchan clan was parked next to me....Matt is big as **** right now...and if thi skid can put on weight like older bro he will be a force.....I remember when i watched older bro Patchan in hs against Central i believe he looked MUCH better on the dline.

This kid is thin right now...but he can be a force down the road.

Saw them at the spring game, as well. Scott's definitely a legit 6'6.

BTW, did you mean against Booker T in the state championship?

What's his position?

future 3-4 DE?

This is a kid who you slap on a RS and hope be gets to 250-260 his RSFR year.

I agree, would love to see him EE then redshirt unless he is by far one of the 2 best DEs on the team, which is hard to imagine a true Fr being better than a Sr McCord, Jr AQM, a Soph Thomas, a redshirt Fr/Soph Jackson, a redshirt Fr/Soph Harris, etc...
