After transferring from Columbus to Killian last spring, 2014 CB Trumaine Washington set big goals for his new team. After starting the season 4-0, the Cougars dropped a pivotal district game to South Dade.
“A lot of people put us in a category with Coral Reef and Southridge, but we wanted to be in that category with Columbus, Booker T, and University School so we’ve just tried to prove people wrong. We had a tough loss on Saturday against South Dade, we just took them lightly and we weren’t going as hard as we did in practice.”
What’s been the key to Killian’s success?
“The way we worked in the summer and spring is all paying off right now.”
There is one game in particular that is sticking out to Washington on the schedule.
“We gotta focus on all the games, but the game that will show us where we are is most likely Columbus. We still have Coral Reef and Palmetto in the district too.”
Washington hasn’t been receiving the interest he had hoped for from Miami, but there are a couple other schools that have popped up on his radar.
“Louisville is a school that is showing me a lot of interest right now. They’re sending me a lot of stuff. Florida has also been showing interest so those two schools are standing out right now. I like how Louisville has a whole bunch of people from down here.”
While the ‘Canes haven’t been actively recruiting him, he is still keeping a close eye on how they’re doing.
“I like how they got all the freshmen in there and leading them, especially Duke. Deon (Bush) was at my house the other day and we were talking about the game and I just told him how he’s making big plays like he did at Columbus. I just know he’s working out there. He might train me when the season is over.”
The junior cornerback is very close to 2015 ATH JaQuan Johnson, who is one of the top players in South Florida.
“Me and JaQuan always talk about how whatever school I go to, he will go to.
Washington has 3 interceptions on the year including a pick-6 against Southridge. He has been handling punt return and kick return duties as well.
