Miami QB Jarren Williams is coming off one of the all-time great games for any UM quarterback after throwing a record-breaking 6 TD’s vs. Louisville last weekend. What has been the difference for him in the second half of the season compared to the first half?
“Experience, number one. Two is having a good feel with the offense,” Williams said. “And three, a lot of things I learned throughout each game. Those are the main things, just managing the game, that experience of being out there, understanding different situations, being on the same page with coach (Dan) Enos.
“I feel like me and him have a better understanding for each other, my strengths and weaknesses, he has a better feel for it. And I understand when he calls plays what he’s trying to do, what he sees. I’m his eyes out there. Really being on the same page, a coach on the field.”
It's been an incredible turnaround for Williams, when just three weeks ago he was on the bench and N’Kosi Perry was named the starter for the Pitt game.
“I mean, really, when you expect something, it’s never how it’s going to go,” Williams said. “I told myself keep my head down, keep working, that God had a plan for me. I kept working and good things happened.”
After setting the TD record at UM, Williams said he got congratulations from former Cane QB’s Stephen Morris and Malik Rosier.
“I had a lot of people congratulating me,” Williams said.
The most impressive of the 6 TD’s ? According to his OC Dan Enos, it was the screen to DeeJay Dallas.
“Just being patient with it, seeing it’s not there - drift to the screen,” Williams said. “(Enos) liked how I was patient with it.”
What’s Williams’ goals in practice during this bye week?
“To treat it as if we have a game this week,” Williams said. “Come out laser focused, intensity.”
The staff will be using the bye week to talk with juniors about potentially leaving for the NFL vs. staying for their senior seasons, but Williams says he’s not getting involved with individual player’s decisions.
“I want those guys to do what’s best for them and their families,” Williams said.
Coming out of the bye week, the Canes will face-off against FIU in a local matchup at Marlins Park.
“That’s where the Orange Bowl was, that’s sacred ground,” Williams said. “It’ll be an electric feel to play at that stadium… it’s going to be fun.
“We understand what that field means to us and what that field represents.”
