Playoff races are starting to heat up in the NFL and a lot of former UM running backs and tight ends made some noise this past weekend. With no further delay, let’s get right into this week’s recap.
The Dolphins’ Frank Gore had 8 carries for 21 yards against Bills. Mark Walton had one carry for 10 yards for Cincinnati in a home loss to the Broncos. UM all-time leading rusher and Browns’ RB Duke Johnson did get any carries against Houston but he did make two catches for 12 yards on three targets. On the opposing team in that same game, another UM RB did some damage as the Texans’ Lamar Miller ran for 103 yards on 19 carries, his second straight 100+ yard game, to go along with one catch for 12 yards. Ravens’ RB Gus Edwards had 21 carries for 82 yards in a huge road victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
LAC’s Travis Benjamin caught a beautifully thrown 46-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Rivers in a narrow win in Pittsburgh.
In Green Bay’s 20-17 loss to the Cardinals that also resulted in the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy, Packers’ TE Jimmy Graham caught eight passes for 50 yards. Former UM basketball player Erik Swoope caught one pass for the Colts for four yards in a 6-0 loss to Jacksonville. On his only target, Panthers TE Greg Olsen caught a pass for 13 yards against Tampa Bay before suffering a foot injury that Carolina fears might be season-ending. Cleveland’s David Njoku had a quiet day in terms of yardage, only catching three passes for 8 yards. In a 26-22 loss to the Titans, Jets’ TE Chris Herndon caught two passes for 31 yards.
Chiefs DL Allen Bailey had himself a day with seven tackles and a half sack. Pittsburgh’s Anthony Chickillo had one tackle in a loss to the Chargers. Giants rookie DT RJ McIntosh made his first appearance on an NFL field and recorded two tackles in a 30-27 OT win over Chicago. Calais Campbell had two tackles, a sack, and one pass deflection in Jacksonville’s shutout of the Colts. Al-Quadin Muhammad had a couple of tackles in that same game.
Another big contributor in the Giants’ win over the Bears was LB Olivier Vernon, who recorded five tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
LAR cornerback Sam Shields recorded one tackle in the Rams’ win over the Lions.
Chargers K Michael Badgley made one field goal and two extra points, but that one field goal at the every end of the game gave the Chargers a 33-30 win over Pittsburgh in which he had three attempts because of former UM CB Artie Burns getting called for three offside penalties. Bears’ P Pat O’Donnell had six punts for a total of 303 yards with 1 punt landing inside the 20. Atlanta P Matt Bosher had five punts for 252 yards and landing three of them within the 20.
