2020 Trinity Christian Academy (FL) 4-star CB Fred Davis has racked up 11 early offers so far, including from Alabama, Florida, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and, of course, the Miami Hurricanes. UM has made him a priority even as an underclassman, sending staff to watch both Davis and 2019 commit RB Marcus Crowley for TCA’s spring game on Tuesday.
“Things are going good with Miami, they were at the spring game the other day,” Davis said of the Canes.
Leading the charge at the spring game was Miami TE coach Todd Hartley, who continues to make in-roads in Duval County.
“My relationship with coach Hartley is great,” Davis said. “He is a person that will keep it real with you and tell you the truth.”
CB coach Mike Rumph is also in contact with Davis and has teamed with Hartley to get Davis on board in Category20. Last time Davis spoke with CIS, he said Miami offered him as a defensive back in general. He narrowed that down this time, saying UM views him as a cornerback.
“They like me at corner,” Davis said. “They say I will fit into their defense because I’m fast, physical, long, and have good technique.”
Davis cites the people at UM, along with the academic appeal of Miami and the ability to come back to the program in the future as features that draw him to Coral Gables.
“The players and the coaches are what I like most about Miami,” Davis said. “Also the education, it’s a private college so it’s not so big, so I can have one-on-one’s with some of my teachers if I need it. Also, I can see myself playing there and if I end up going to the NFL, Miami would be a place I would always come back to.”
As for upcoming visits, Davis plans a return trip to UM in the summer, along with visits to two SEC programs.
“So far, I’ll be going to Miami, Bama, and Florida in the summer,” Davis said.
While Davis is not yet ready to start narrowing things down and is taking the process slow, his eventual school of choice will be able to offer a comforting atmosphere, academics, opportunities after football, and a chance to see the field right away.
“I’m just enjoying the process right now,” Davis said. “What I’m looking for in a school is a school that I will get early playing time, a good education, good environment, and where I can see myself coming back there after football.”
