Williams discusses Panthers loss, moving offense forward without Dallas

Stefan Adams
After taking a few days to reassess and review the film of Miami’s loss vs. FIU, QB Jarren Williams admitted that he could’ve done more to get ready for the Panthers.

“I felt I was prepared (going in),” Williams said. “(But) looking back, I felt I could have prepared more.”

Williams threw 3 interceptions on the day and, at times, it seemed like FIU knew where he would go with the ball.

“I wouldn’t say they knew what we were doing, but they prepared well and had a good scheme for us,” Williams said.

Coming off a 52-point and nearly 500-yard performance vs. Louisville, the Canes’ offense struggled to reach 200 yards vs. FIU through three quarters before getting things together in a fourth quarter comeback that fell short; Williams ultimately finished 19-36 (52.8%) for 249 yards and 2 TD’s to go along with the 3 picks.

“I felt like I wasn’t myself out there, wasn’t playing how Jarren Williams plays,” he said. “Right now, I’m focusing on this week, being 1-0 this week.”

What was Williams seeing on his interceptions?

“The first one he had a slant and I was reading my read key and he flew out, but the safety came down on it and hit him, caused him to fall, pick,” Williams said. “The next one, a collision as he was catching the ball. Because they were coming down on a lot of our RPO’s. The ball hit him he got hit, went up in the air.”

RB DeeJay Dallas left the game with a dislocated elbow and will miss the rest of the season, and Williams is looking to pick up his leadership capabilities in Dallas’ absence.

“I try to be a little more vocal, bring that juice, energy, keep guys going, that swag - let’s play our football,” Williams said. “Time to time, guys just get caught up going through the motions. We have to attack everything. Most important thing I stress is to be you - go out there and be you, you’ve been playing this game for how long? So go out there with your swag and be you.”

How do we continue to have QB's that just don't it either mentally, physically or have the stones to consistently play at high level.

Williams- Mentally weak
Kosi- Mentally
Rosier- Just limited physically and Mentally
Kaaya- No stones
Morris- Mentally Weak
Jacory- Mentally
Marve- Mentally
Freeman- Physically didn't have
Wright-A little of everything.

I mean Mentally week from X's and O's standpoint for all except Williams, who seems to just be Weak minded

It all comes from coaching. This same roster could be whipped into shape and look like a completely different football team with different leadership.

It's not that we have bad luck recruiting dumb players or QBs, we don't constantly recruit busts. We constantly have coaches that don't put players in position to succeed. Al Golden stumbled to 9 wins one year, Richt got 10 without an offense. The talent is there, the leadership is not.

****, this is annoying.

I always tell my kids there may be kids smarter or more athletic than you, but never let anyone outwork you. The fact that again he wasn't prepared as he should be is just inexcusable.

I'm not sold on this kid to lead us to anything more than another 6/7 win season next season.

He's gonna need to take BIG leap next year if he's gonna be the shoo-in starter.

He reads the field way too slow if his first read is covered, at times looks like he's watching a movie out there instead of going through his progressions & is very slow footed both in & outside the pocket, he runs into sacks way too often.

He can be accurate with well defined 1 read concepts where he knows exactly where to go with the ball, but when Defense sit back & play Tampa 2 Zone coverage he doesn't know wtf to do with the ball & has a tendency to get extremely gun shy where he just won't let it go.

He needs to do a lot of work in the offseason, Idk exactly what his issue is but when he's off, his bad games are horrendous, like unsettling bad.

and yet your avatar says "maturity is overrated". Quit talking out of your ***, pal.

Young & immature QB. He’s not a leader yet & until he becomes one, MIAMI will be mediocre. Good players & good young players with leadership skills make coaching look better.

He still gets a pass. He’s a R-Freshman. If he doesn’t take that leap next season, then there is a big problem because MIAMI can’t afford another reset to the QB & Head Coach.

Agreed! He might work best in a spread concept but if he doesn’t take that leap like you said, he can’t play in the NFL based on the evidence you presented because if he can’t master this offense, he has no shot. Nor can he be very successful at the college level besides average.

Agree. Next years schedule and team should, at most, lose 2 games (that’s being generous and excludes bowl, ACCCG). It’s a ridiculously easy schedule.

I threw my phone across the room when I saw him refer to himself in the 3rd person. It’s beyond pathetic at this point what we are subject to watching on Saturdays now. I really wish he wouldn’t have been allowed to come back when he went AWOL before the Pitt game.

LCE, you’ve been spot on almost every time and I pray to God he works his tail off this offseason. For Miami’s sake this season needs to be his “growing up” season and next year he needs to make the jump from good to great!!! No excuses next year of him being young and without experience.
