Some 7-on-7 notes

Some 7-on-7 notes

DMoney
Was out at Greentree for the camp, and at lunch the current team participated in 7on7s. The whole squad wasn't out there (no Duke, Malcolm Lewis, Highsmith, McGee) but all four quarterbacks were throwing and the young guys were getting work. Some notes:

- Expectations are sky-high for Denzel Perryman. He played strong as a 208-pound freshman, now he's up to 228 and timing at 4.52. Not only is he much bigger, but he's assumed a natural leadership role as the middle linebacker. Perryman is not a vocal-type, but he's communicating more. D'Onofrio is on him hard to be the best linebacker ever to come out of Miami, which means studying film like Sean Spence and working like Ray Lewis.

- Stephen Morris was out throwing and looks sharp. He is the leader of the offense and ran the practice. The highlight of his day was a touchdown strike down the seam to Asante Cleveland, who had gotten by Kelvin Cain. His worst throw was also at Cain. Morris was late to the flats and Cain cribbed it. After 7on7s were over, he lined up at receiver and showed off his athletic ability with some quality routes.

- Tracy Howard is everything you'd expect. Rare change-of-direction ability, excellent awareness, confidence. He caused Lockhart to fall down on a hitch and picked Ryan Williams for 6. He also broke on a Stephen Morris pass from way down the field and almost made a diving pick. The only knock is that he's small, but he has the look of a starter.

- Duke was at church today, but I've been told he is who we thought he was. The coaching staff is already devising ways to give him the ball.

- Rashawn Scott is a strong receiver. He's made a lot of progress in the weight room and it shows. Scott went up and got an under thrown deep corner from Gray Crow and generally looked sharp. Dorsett scored a TD on a Ryan Williams pass over the middle and looks good size-wise. Hurns was solid and made his share of catches from all of the QBs.

- Lockhart is smaller than I thought. 5'11 and skinny, but with strong hands and quickness. He was a nice target over the middle.

- Nate Dortch is small and quiet, but he can cover. He was right on Allen Hurns' hip to break up a deep ball from Ryan Williams. Ladarius Gunter had some nice PBUs and looked impressive.

- Chickillo is another guy who has put on good weight. I underestimated his growth potential, he is carrying the weight well. He abused our offensive tackles this spring against the run and pass and looks poised for a major year.

- Deon Bush was at safety with Rayshawn Jenkins. Neither guy did anything major but they passed the look test.

- Jelani Hamilton was participating but had a knee brace.

- Asante Cleveland made the catch of the day with a one-hander on a throw behind him from Morris.

- The overall vibe was positive. The players were engaged, they had fun and they coached each other. Towards the end, Morris signaled to switch up the offense and defense. They lined up like this:

DEFENSE
Mike James-MLB, Warlord- OLB, Ryan Williams-RUSH, Morris-CB/S, Dorsett-CB, Clements- S, Rashawn Scott-S

OFFENSE
RayRay-QB, Bush, Howard, Jenkins- WR, Buchanon-TE, and Denzel-RB.

RayRay threw a strike over the middle to Buchanon which had him jumping up and down shouting "I STILL GOT IT!" He finished the drive with a touchdown pass underneath to Gunter. VT subbed in at QB and immediately threw a jump ball INT to Rashawn Scott. Cain then took over and underthrew a wide open Deon Bush, who climbed the ladder and almost made a highlight reel catch.

- The linemen had their own 7on7 after their workout and threw up some Hail Marys, one of which was high-pointed by a slender Seantrel Henderson.

- Kosar was out there at the camp, as was Keith Bryant.

- Overall, my main takeaways are Morris's health, the size of some key players, the young talent at DB and the team chemistry.

THe best lb ever from um is a big ask.

Bam! Great stuff, DMoney. I won't beat a dead horse, but it's encouraging to see Morris healthy and the D coming up with some plays. Labor Day can't come soon enough!

But I like that that's the goal. I really like it.

Good news on Chick. I wasn't sure he was going to be a guy who would benefit from getting huge.

No doubt, but why not aim high?

D'Onofrio actually told Perryman he can be "among the greats" just doing what he's doing now. He's that good. But if he wants to transcend that, he needs to become a preparation freak.

Good stuff, D. But one question - you said Howard looks small - every picture I've seen the kid looks stout for a corner and tall. Is he really that small?

Pure guess, I'd say he's 5'10, 175 pounds. He's a hair taller than Finnie but a little leaner.

Two things to be taken from this, IMO: Morris is healthy and taking charge, and Tracy Howard will see significant playing time, if not outright starting (assuming he gains a little weight), by the half way point in the season.

Someone in another thread said Howard was talking smack. This is going to be Howard, Chickillo, Perryman, and Duke's team.

Wow... I've been fooled then. I always thought he was 6'1" and way more built than Finnie. Oh well....

Love that they are even bringing this up, the staff must see some great potential in Perryman. Surprised he was only 208 last year, he played much stronger than that weight.

Thanks D. im getting so pumped for some canes football. Wish it was here already.

i hope bush plays safety. him and howard would be sick but we still have crawford and whoever we get this year.hopefully mackensie alexander.

Hey D$, is the staff taking practice different than the two previous regimes? And in what ways D$.

This was a 7 on 7 with no coaches present, but the new staff's practices are longer and have more teaching periods. The camps are completely different.
