Signing Day Profile: OT Chris Washington

Matthew_Suero
2020 Overton (TN) OT Chris Washington officially became a Miami Hurricane this morning. Washington is the 8th player to sign with Miami.

The 6-7 270 pounder is currently a consensus 3-star recruit in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Washington is the #1,166 player nationally, #92 OT in the country, and the #34 player in Tennessee.

Recruiting Story

Miami found Washington over the summer and offered the lengthy tackle just a few days before Paradise Camp. Miami was able to convince Washington to come to Paradise Camp on his own dime and compete in front of the staff. Washington was one of the top performers of the night, and the staff gave him the green light to commit that same night. Washington would head back home committed to the Miami Hurricanes. Ole Miss did make a push at Washington early in the season, but he remained solid on his pledge to Miami.

Evaluation

On film, Washington shows a few things that are essential to be a LT at the Power 5 level: outstanding feet and length. His ability to sync his feet and his hands together in pass protection will make him above-average in this regard if he can gain some strength. He has the flexibility and movement to recover and push stunts either inside or wide. When he lets his base get off-balance or he exposes his chest, he is susceptible to power moves such as bull rushes. Shows great knee bend and knows how to use leverage to his advantage.

While Washington demonstrates that he is aggressive and will finish his blocks, he is not a people mover that has the raw power to dominate in the run game right now. He will excel much more when asked to run zone concepts rather than gap concepts. He is a position blocker in the running game and does a good job of hitting moving targets and redirecting at the second level. He could be a weapon on outside zone runs and in the screen game with his movement skills.

Of the few reps we saw Washington take at Paradise, he won them all. He proved he was a take against a tough DL field. Long, tall, and athletic, just the prototype of what Butch Barry is looking for. He looked much more filled out in his frame than his listed 270 pounds, so he’s already on his way to adding good weight. Miami did not run combine testing at Paradise, but he did clock a 5.43 40 time at the Opening Nashville Regional.

The Team

Miami’s offensive line was the weakest position group on the team for most of the season, largely due to the amount of youth and inexperience in that room. The youth made for a difficult season, but the good news is everybody will return.

Redshirt Probability: 9/10

Miami’s tackles struggled last season, and Washington is an early enrollee, but I do not see him getting much playing time in 2020. Washington is a developmental prospect much like Zion Nelson in 2019. The difference is Miami is now in position to actually develop their developmental prospects before sending them out into the fire.

Prototype OT in 2 years. We needed at least 2 more though as most OL don't pan out

If Washington was the No. 4 OL recruit in this class, that would be perfect. But that's not his fault. Looks like a good developmental prospect with great measurables for the position.
Welcome to the U!

At 270 he is already 30 pounds heavier than Zion Nelson when he entered and a wider frame. As an EE he should be 295-300 of solid weight by summer at least.
