Redwine talks move to safety

Peter Ariz
Sheldrick Redwine's move from cornerback to safety is one of the more intriguing roster developments heading into next season. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz came to Redwine this spring and asked if he'd be open to a switch and it was not a difficult decision for him.

"I'm transitioning well, trying to take after everything Quan (Johnson) is doing, because he does everything right and I'm trying to imitate that and bring it to the game with me," Redwine said.

Redwine said that the biggest difference for him at safety is "playing in more space" and that he will be asked to tackle and hit more near the line of scrimmage. His message remained the same, though -- that this is a move that best benefits the team.

"Whatever they need me to do. If they need me to play D-Line, I'll do it too," he added.

The only other time Redwine could recall having played safety in his career was in high school when JaQuan Johnson missed the first four games of the season and he was forced to fill in.

"It was high school so I don't really remember everything, but I felt comfortable back there," he said.

Redwine is currently weighing 200 pounds and is unsure if the coaches plan to beef him up even more before the season or keep him where he is at just in case he needs to flip back to corner. He gave his thoughts on how his former position group is progressing.

"They've looked really good. They're making a lot of plays on the ball -- Mike Jackson has been gaming. Our corners have been really helping me. It's good going from corner to safety because I already know where the corner is supposed to be, so that's helping me slow the game down," Redwine said.

It sounds like Michael Jackson is surprising a lot of people with his play so far this spring.

I wonder if he'll get some legit playing time at CB this year.

Everyone seems certain that Dean, Bandy will be ready right away. Dangerous game to play.

Delaney, Young, Jackson have experience playing major college football.

Dean has two years of JUCO experience. He better be ready to play.

dean and bandy should be ready to contribute but how much has to be determined. I expect Jackson to have a huge say at cb, I think malek young is only sure fire starter until game week.

bandy should win nickle back job and if so having Jackson's length at boundry could help a lot. I think people are down on Jackson cause is a golden recruit so they all must suck problem was he got good players at top but then at bottom would take so many fliers on guys who weren't Miami quality that there was not depth behind the 1s

Not only experience with Dean and Delaney, but speed and size too. Bandy brings speed, aggression and ball instincts. We'll be a solid 2 deep at boundary and field corner.

FC- Young, Dean & Bandy

BC- MJ, Delaney

Michael Jackson looked good against West Virginia last year

Sheldrick Redwine is the piece that could really have our entire defense solidified from top to bottom if his transition to the FS position is successful which I believe it will be.

I think the Redwine move will turn out to be a home run. Especially playing next to Jaquan.

Just in the photos/videos that have been put out, Jackson definitely LOOKS the part.

Long and athletic build.

You think starting 2 are Redwine/JJ? I think Amari Carter starts day 1 alongside JJ

Hell, even Delaney starting isn't a certainty by any stretch. Not if the light has turned on for Jackson.

Nobody's job is safe but Jaquan's.

Delaney would've been drafted this year and y'all don't assume he's starting next year? GTFOH. The man's coming to Miami to kill it a season and try and get in the first round.

no doubt in mind this will be our starting duo at safety for the next two years.

Base Defense
CB - Delaney - Jackson - Mayes
CB - Young/Dean - Bandy
FS - Redwine - Jaquan - James - Knowles
SS - Jaquan - Carter/Finley

So basically if Redwine isn't in, Jaquan would slide over to be FS and Carter or Finley would enter as SS.
And if Dean/Bandy aren't ready to play significantly, then I can see Jaquan also sliding down to the slot and bringing in Carter/Finley when we go nickel. But I think ideally we have Young (or Bandy) in the slot when we go nickel and Delaney/Dean on the outside.

I remember when somebody called this and yall said Michael Jackson was moving to CB

Delaney will have to earn it since the competition at CB is stronger this year.

You never know, Dean could prove to be really good. We know the coaches already trust Young, and Jackson came on toward the end of the season. They'll all play a lot anyway.
