Practice Report 8-8

Practice Report 8-8

-Duke brought the fireworks today. A day after being in a non-contact jersey, he stole the show on offense. There was one point where he ran through a linebacker in a drill and the entire offense surrounded him, jumping up and down. He made people miss all day long.

-Tracy Howard made a couple tackles on outside runs. He hasn’t looked fazed at all. The QBs tested him multiple times today but no catches were made downfield on him. The only times he was caught on were on screen plays, where the tackle was almost immediately made.

-David Perry had an impressive day. He caught a 20-yard TD from Ryan Williams on a perfectly thrown ball. Rayshawn Jenkins was in coverage, but Williams put it only where Perry could make the play. He also caught a pass across the middle for a 10-yard gain.

-Maybe the most impressive performance on the defensive side of the ball was from freshman LB Jawand Blue. Blue got the 2nd team reps at MLB and was all over the field. He showed great sideline-to-sideline speed and blew up a couple plays in the backfield.

-Deon Bush looked very good in run support from the safety position. He has been impressive the last few days of practice and seems to be picking up the scheme well. He has not really been out of position for the most part.

-AJ Highsmith had a one-handed interception off of Williams. He was dumping it down to a tight end and Highsmith read it and jumped up to make the play. He seems to be turning the corner and has a great understanding of the game.

-Kendal Thompkins had a couple of drops today, including a perfectly thrown ball 15-yards downfield from Morris.

-Raphael Kirby looked good from his OLB position on the 2nd team. He got into the backfield a few times to help stuff the run.

-It was another very good day for DeQuan Ivery. He showed an incredible first step and a vicious swim move in his pass-rush, which isn’t considered his specialty. He continues to be a pleasant surprise and is pushing for serious playing time.

-Ladarius Gunter blew up a screen on his side for a loss of yards. It is looking more and more like him and Tracy have a stronghold on the starting corner spots.

Good lord :quag:. Excited for the night report, it's two a days today, right?

Nice report, thanks.

Interesting to see Kirby playing 2nd team olb. Is he playing sam or will?

I'm a big fan of Ladarius Gunter's game. I think he'd be even better at safety, but at least he brings some physical play to corner. Is McGee doing anything in practice or is he just shuffling his way down the depth chart?

If we happen to switch to a 3-4 for a few series a game, holy isht at DP and Blue roaming the middle.

i'd feel fairly good if our starting corners are gunter and howard, That would mean that in 3 wide sets, playing man, we'd bring in mcgee to match a slot man - speed with speed. And possibly finnie against four wide sets. Pretty comfortable with that. Dequan may just end up being the steel of that class. We haven't had that kind of player in a while. Glad to hear of active backfield Dt's are back at green-tree. Expecting absolutely nothing from Thompkins. Kid has always been a green-tree heisman. Disturbing that we don't hear our two top TE's making noise.

can't mention enough how grateful i am for the reports.

I want Kirby at WILL
Perryman @ Mike

EJ @ SaM... I know we have some R.Buch fan's but he doesn't impress me. Overran too many plays for me. I'm sorry give some of the younger guys a chance with his PT.

GREAT news on Duke.. exactly what i expected to hear from him. Very surprised at D.Ivery, but his size is quite impressive surprised he did not have more offers.

Please K. Thompkins just graduate and give up your ship. I mean nothing worse than a 5yr senior Non contributor.

-I'm not surprised, his whole career has been inconsistent at best

-I really hope those are our corners going into the season opener

you can see the depth and players that want to play develop right in front of us....

i know its practice and all but reports like this cause

can the season take any longer to get here?? things are getting sore!

D'Onofrio has said that when we go to 3-4, it'll be the rush end that stands up and plays linebacker. So, in most cases, our 3-4 linebackers would be Gaines-Perryman-Buchanon-Green. But our 2nd team, hopefully, would be Johnson-Blue-Kirby-McCord.

What's up with Morris?

Glad to hear on Duke, we need a dynamic player on offense.

Not surprised on Blue.

It's hard for me to contain my excitement with the potential of our linebackers over the next few years. I'm not expecting dominance this year, but just knowing that we have some physical, mean kids playing there with some natural talent is so refreshing.

I hope KT gets it together. All reports were that he was busting his butt more this year. Hopefully, one day with a couple drops doesn't ruin that. Keep your head up KT.

This LB unit should become a really good one over the course of the season. It already should be better than last year but I expect them to get even better as the season progresses. Kirby and Blue should contribute alot. I can't wait.

A big reason the LB's should be better is the DL should be also. Good to hear these guys are plugging the middle up. And we got Chick on the edge causing havoc.

And Duke! Can't wait til the rest of the nation finds out about this kid.
