Nationally-ranked Flanagan, led by stellar defense

Nash Williams
The Flanagan Falcons (2-0) defense is as good as advertised.

After limiting one of South Florida's most explosive offenses, the Coconut Creek Cougars, to 14 points on Friday night in their Broward county showdown, the Falcons are starting to look like a team poised to make a run at the 8A state championship.

Between Friday's victory and their Week 1 win over Stoneman Douglas, the Falcons have given up a total of 76 yards this season on a total of 65 carries.

The key to the Falcons' success all starts up front with senior defensive ends Fabian Gordon and Jordan Eubanks both of whom it contributed to Flanagan's total of 9 sacks Friday night. Also on the defensive line at nose guard is Dennis Jackson who recorded a sack of his own Friday night to go along with a fumble recovery.

Flanagan senior linebacker, Devin Bush Jr., who stands in at 6-foot, 220 pounds, is rated as a four-star linebacker by 247Sports Composite rankings. He is ranked as the 10th-best inside-linebacker in the country and is described by opposing coaches as "fearless." Bush totaled 67 tackles last year, 8.5 of which were for a loss.

Bush will have the Cougars offensive line having nightmares for a while as he was a constant terror Friday and limited the Cougars to a mere 11 yards rushing on 37 carries.

Not to be forgotten are the versatile defensive back Rocco Marucci and linebacker Nikholi Jahgai who had many key plays Friday night including Marucci's three pass breakups and Jahgai's forced fumble.

The "Dirty Birds" are led on the sidelines by defensive coordinator Stanford Samuels, a former Florida State standout, and former first-round NFL draft pick, head coach Devin Bush.

They don't do anything extravagant on defense either, they just get after your a$$.
