MNW WR Rogers shines at Rivals Miami, talks UM

2022 Miami Northwestern (FL) WR Jalen Rogers was one of the top performers out at Rivals Miami last weekend, shining against some of the top talent in the Southeastern region.

“I performed great. I went 12 for 12 on reps [in 1-on-1’s], I went a lot of times. I did a great job,” Rogers said.

Over the next few months, the 5’11” 155-pound prospect is hoping to boost his profile even higher. Shortly after last weekend’s event, Rogers landed an offer from Tulane, while he previously held bids from Syracuse and Tennessee State.

“Definitely the goal is to get more attention,” Rogers said. “I also communicate with Louisville, Illinois, Utah. I’m just going to wait and see how things go after spring (before any decisions).”

While the Miami Northwestern star has not yet heard from the local Miami Hurricanes, Rogers admits that he would love to build a relationship with the UM staff.

“I love them, that’s the hometown,” Rogers said of UM. “My cousin Mark Walton played over there. I can go break records over there, I know I can.”

Even though he hasn’t established lines of communication with Miami yet, Rogers has already made a visit to UM, which came during a junior day event on campus that he attended with some teammates back in January of 2020.

“Overall, I like the facilities, I like the scenery. It’s a good school,” Rogers said of UM.

Where would the Hurricanes fit into his recruitment if Rogers did land an offer from UM?

“That would be amazing, I would commit to be honest with you. Like I said, that’s the hometown,” Rogers said.

While he waits to see if he can land more FBS offers going forward, when it does come time to make his decision, Rogers already has a good idea of what he will be looking for in a program.

“First is education, like the classes I want to major in, which is engineering,” Rogers said. “And mainly on the field, I’ll be looking at the passing situation. Is it a passing school? Because I’m a receiver, so I like to get the ball in my hands as many chances as I can get. Especially as a freshman, I want to go and play, do what I got to do to go play as a freshman.”

Going into his final year of high school, Rogers is laser-focused on improving his game, staying healthy, and making 2021 something to be seen.

“My junior season, I would say I did okay,” Rogers said. “My first game, I had a little minor injury setback. My senior year, I’m coming, 100% for sure. I’m mainly working on gaining size. My speed is my main ability, nobody can match my speed. That’s just how it is.”

I guess I can see on paper why we're not all over him, but he just seems like the kind of kid we pass on that winds up at Louisville, torching us..

Lol! I literally wondered if he had any relation to Eli.

Not a Plan A guy but definitely someone to watch. When are we gonna hit on a bona-fide #1? Richard's seem like the only real deal talent we've hit on in awhile. Jeff Thomas had special traits but he shot himself in the foot.

Man we say this every year. Not a plan A guy.
Befroe we can worry about hitting on stars I would at least like to recruit some more Mike Harley types who have productive careers at UM and a shot at the NFL I‘saw confident that teams win a lot more games with Harley than Jeff Thomas. That guy gives you some highlights and that’s about it.
I also want the Amari Coopers and Devonta Smiths of the world. But before Bama had those guys they had to learn to win with productive players. And once the team won consistently that attracted a higher level of recruit.
If this guy produces, not in 7 on 7 but in actual games, make him a priority. And the same is true for others like him who so many seem to think grow on trees in S Fla.

How many slot receivers do you want?

Wouldn’t mind taking a flyer a solid backup situation if we flop on bond and Gibson he makes ppl miss which is big thing I look at only thing he lacks is tape which is understandable looking at northwesterns wrs in years past .This is gonna be a big season for him

This is another area where we need to improve on. Consider that we have not signed a legit #1 type WR since the 2016 class and Ahmon Richards. That is abysmal no matter how you slice it. When you factor in our location, history and brand it goes from abysmal to an utter embarrassment.

The 2021 class with Brinson, Smith and George was the first for Likens/Lashlee and although we have yet to see these young men perform at this level, I'm willing to say that it was a solid first at bat.

With the type of talent that we have assembled throughout the roster and the QBs specifically, I would expect to start seeing more legit #1 type elite WR prospects begin sniffing around Coral Gables.

One thing though, we better start winning.

Without question and I expect that we will. The upgrades to the defensive staff will prove to be instrumental. Rhett Lashlee and this offensive staff have had a year to work with the offense, develop players and learn which players do what the best and which personnel groupings work best and so on and so on. My point? This offense is about to put on a show.

I'm not about to predict wins and losses but what I will say is that we will be exciting and very fun to watch.

While I don't know this (and don't really feel like doing the research), I have to imagine within a few years we'll be the only school with three WR's in the Hall.

Not that it was very good before, but the combo of Dugans and 'Lil Richt set back the WR room about a decade.
