Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney was pretty impressive in the spring game yesterday, and according to the coaches, he is fully prepared for the challenge ahead.
According to Mario, Toney is up and active at 5:30 AM at the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility, working on catching balls from the jug machines.
"His maturity and preparation is what sticks out. And so 5:30 in the morning, he'll be out there catching some balls. If he makes a mistake, he's gonna come in and watch some film with the veteran players, and see what he has to get better at. You can push him hard. He comes from a family with really deep South Florida football bloodlines, athletic bloodlines, disciplined bloodlines, great culture at home." Said Mario.
Mario realizes he still has a lot to learn, but as a freshman, he feels confident about where he is at the moment.
"He knows he has a ways to go, but he's had a great start this spring and we are gonna push him really hard this summer to make sure we maximize his talent. Really fired up about him and the way he's played.
Many reporters who attended the Spring game, along with Mario, noted that Malachi Toney was likely the standout offensive player. He ended the game with eight catches for 106 yards.
After finishing high school, Toney was somewhat overlooked. He was ranked as the 52nd player in his position across the country and the 44th overall prospect in his state. Additionally, he is recognized as one of the top 400 prospects nationwide.
At American Heritage, Toney recorded 58 receptions for 1,008 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he had 34 rushing attempts for 224 yards, contributing three more touchdowns.
This young man has a lot to learn about his game, but after his impressive performance in the Spring Game and the positive feedback from coaches and the media, he is definitely a player to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
