Would really feel a lot better if jarren got some reps in the blow out bowl game last year. That was malpractice.

@Matthew_Suero What’s the big cane drill? Is that the same as the old school nutcracker? Or more like the Oklahoma drill? And what are the 1 v 1’s?

Derrick Smith coming for Carter or Halls spot it seems everyday he's been making plays it seems like

Carters spot most likely... Smith is more athletic in space. Carter should move to WLB behind Pinckney if Smith beats him out, especially with our depth issues at Lb, it would make us a better team.

Interesting that Tate started out hot and has seemed to cool off.

I’m not sure Williams doesn’t sneak in there and win the job. It’s still early though.

And in my mind Perry is out of it. He can’t hit a WR standing wide open on the sideline. But wouldn’t be surprised if I was wrong about that as well.

i don't think its anything bout hot or cold. he's just not a natural. **** have his ups and downs, but hes still adjusting to this style imo. I've said that jarren is the most polished of the three and if he has everything else in order, he should win the job. the issue is whether all his off field crap is done with and hes 100 percent focused

I realize merely invoking the hallowed name Sean. T on this forum is similar to committing blasphemy, but in this instance I actually believe it's warranted. I guess only time will tell if I am correct or not.

That’s an impossibly high bar. Taylor could have played linebacker, striker, corner, WR, running back, returner etc... at any level of football if he chose that position and focused on it. He was a freak athletically and one of the most violent hitters I ever watched. He ran a 4.5 40 at the combine at 6-2.5 and 230 pounds. The guy could have dropped 20 pounds and been the biggest corner in the NFL when he was first drafted or gained 10-15 and have been the fastest linebacker in the nfl.

Taylor would be the best corner, striker, or safety on the team today if he chose any of those positions. Smith is playing great and might win a starting safety role. There’s no comparison.

Does Derrick Smith play strong or free? Who's spot would he be taking if he were to start?

DB Derrick Smith continues to flash during practice. During the one-on-one portion of practice that the media can view, Smith made an impressive pass break-up when covering slot receiver Mike Harley on a quick slant. Later during the one-on-one session, Smith undercut a crossing route by slot receiver Marshall Few. Both passes were thrown by Tate Martell. Smith had three turnovers during Tuesday's practice.

Striker Romeo Finley on what Smith has shown this spring: "To me he is the most improved so far. He keeps telling me he is going to get that safety spot and I just tell him to keep working."
This is that old school Canes mentality. You don't transfer out the min someone gives you competition. You work your *** off and everyone gets better. Competition breeds development and growth!

Too much is made of “old school mentality” and that kids transfer out when someone gives them competition. That line of thinking is too critical on the kids and doesn’t pass on enough of that responsibility to the coaches. Build the right culture, recruit the right kids, and develop them properly and you’ll see fewer kids leave. That said, long before there was a “portal”, I’ve been an open advocate of laissez-faire transfer rules. These kids need to do what’s best for them, not the school/team - and certainly not the fans/Stan’s.
I agree to an extent. Most of these kids are the man from day 1 of pop warner. Then they get to college where everyone is pretty darn good. The ones that transfer when things get tough don't like competition. Now, don't get me wrong... If they get somewhere and are mistreated or something out of the ordinary happens and they transfer, well that's a different story.

It's true and I love it! This is what real competition is all about and this is why competition at every position will be the key to unlocking this team's vast potential. Amari Carter and Gurvan Hall are UM caliber football players and are very talented but nobody on this team will get pt based on their High School press clippings or even what they did last season. Carter and Hall will have studs like Bubba Bolden and Derrick Smith coming to take their jobs so there is no room for complacency. Soon the entire squad will have battles like this.

I must say that it is extremely gratifying to see Derrick Smith begin to develop and start to come into his own. I was a big fan of his when he was recruited. I saw something in his highlight clips that told me he could be a potential starter and a very good player. He flashed at times his freshman year then seemed to disappear as a sophomore when he moved to Striker. Smith obviously seems much more comfortable in a traditional safety type role. Smith's development just makes us that much deeper at Safety.
