D'ing up UF: Pressure Franks, In The Face

D'ing up UF: Pressure Franks, In The Face

LuCane
I was re-watching our defensive games last year and was reminded of how many different blitz packages we showed throughout the year. We had all sorts of fun things dialed up. Safeties. Corners. All out blitzes. I think about this upcoming game, where the Gators are supposedly relatively weak at OL, and I go back to the FSU 2017 game where I thought Coach Diaz unnecessarily used zone blitzes when we could have beaten FSU's OL straight up and made things more difficult for a young Blackmon (QB).

I think this upcoming game will be interesting because of Blake Baker's influence and, more specifically, because of Franks at QB. When I watched their games, as others have also noted, he struggled with A and B gap pressure, as most QBs. However, he was disproportionately bad in these instances, often losing control of his feet and winding up those throwing mechanics. So, I remembered some blitz packages I had seen and would be shocked if we don't see this Saturday:

Pinckney is a fantastic and wily blitzer. Toss him and Shaq in the A gaps:

But, also drop one out and directly into quick pass:

Or, drop them both off:

Don't even have to show it pre-snap. Even slightly delay the A-Gap blitz and work it off a guy like Bethel:

We want to see this Franks fella drifting, tangling his feet and using that long windup on the move. Let's get it.

We have two veteran LBs. 4 year starters. They've seen virtually everything. One of them is an elite blitzer. The other is incredibly cerebral. If I'm up at night creating weird blitz packages to terrify Franks into a game-time shell, I start any packages with these two guys and occupy the mind of their most experienced OL (the RS Senior center, Buchanan).

Need to do that A gap blitz early and often

Franks is about the size of Cam Newton. He’s 6’6 235lbs

He’s gonna be a load to consistently bring down, especially in short yardage situations

Shaq and Pinck aren't getting the respect they deserve for guys who are 4 year starters and have played well all 4 years. I am excited to see how they come out this game and show the nation they are the best LB tandem in the country.
