Cristobal talks Spring Game

Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mario Cristobal spoke briefly to the media following Firday night’s spring game. Cristobal commended a couple of players who could still be in high school – freshmen Rueben Bain and Ray Ray Joseph for their standout performances.

Defensive lineman Rueben Bain, a product of Miami Central, continued to make a name for himself with three sacks during the game. Cristobal praised Bain's relentless motor, toughness, and ability to be disruptive on the field, saying, "he's been coached really, really well over at his high school… he's used to this practice regimen, the structure, and he's extremely disruptive."

On the offensive side of the ball, freshman wide receiver Ray Ray Joseph impressed with his 79-yard touchdown reception from Emory Williams. Cristobal highlighted Joseph's versatility, noting his skills not only in catching passes but also in blocking and throwing his body around. "You should see him block; you should see him throw his body around," said Cristobal. Describing Joseph as an "elite, awesome, incredible human being," he emphasized the significant impact Joseph has on his teammates.

Cristobal said of both Bain and Joseph, “These are Miami Hurricanes. This is what Miami always needs to have – and lots of them. I remember playing here and that’s what my teammates used to look like.”

In addition to praising the freshmen standouts, Cristobal touched on the performances of other players, including quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who he said had a sharp game and continues to take ownership of the offense. "He's doing a great job as a leader; he's doing a great job progressing, and he's just doing a great job taking ownership as a leader on this football team and making this thing go forward," commented Cristobal.

He also mentioned that second-year QB Jacurri Brown had an “off night”, and that it was unfortunate because it was not indicative of the progress he made during spring practice.

“He’s a special football player. He did a really good job,” Cristobal said of freshman QB Emory Williams.

Third-year wideout Jacolby George has shown glimpses of his ability early in his Canes career, but he is needed to take a major leap forward this season. He reeled in a nice touchdown grab from TVD.

“There’s a change in him as a person, as a guy that’s hungry to be better and make his teammates better,” Cristobal said of George. Miami’s coach mentioned how important George’s mother has been in his growth as a person as well.

The spring game was an opportunity for the Hurricanes to assess their progress and identify areas for improvement. While the team showed signs of inconsistency, Cristobal was pleased with their overall progress. "We really feel like we have progressed… and we gotta continue to progress from here," he said, looking forward to continued growth in the coming months.
