CanesInSight Live 7/14: The 85 Scholarship problem for ‘22

Canes Legacy
Series:
Since the NCAA gave players the chance to come back and redo a season, I’ve been waiting for another change to keep there from being a mass roster crunch across the country in 2022. As with all things they’re faced with, the NCAA decided instead to be lazy and do nothing. That means Miami has to be back at 85 by the start of the 2022 season.

We built this episode around looking at how that might be possible when we’re sitting at 95 this year, only have 8 seniors, and will at least have 20 more players to add next offseason. Bonus at the end for some recruiting pickem type challenge.

thanks for watching and all of your support!

I didn’t have us at 95 but I haven’t paid as much attention over the last few years.

I'm glad you picked up on this topic, so many folks in the recruiting forum have fantasies of us taking 3 DTs, 3 DEs, 3 WRs, 3 LBs, etc. Unless we get mass attrition, that aint gonna happen. I think we'll be just fine depth chart wise with 1 LB, 1 WR, 1-2 DTs, 1-2 DEs, etc for the 2022 class, any holes can be patched up with more gametime ready portal players

One thing though, i think your numbers are off. I have us at 91 including Ragone and Clay James our long snapper. Ragone graduates this year as well so his schollie is freed up. Also, i dont think we need to worry about walk on schollies in general, they're a reward and a thank you, they dont have to be renewed every year. All the walkons you named can easily be let go by the time 2022 rolls around if we need to get to 85.

The 95 guys that I counted on scholarship for this year are all there on the slides. There might be some that aren’t after all that’s gone on this year, but it’s really hard to know unless UM makes it so. The big question is if those guys who graduate will actually head out, or if they’ll still stuck around. Ragone is one of a number of “Redshirt Sophs” who are finishing up their fourth year and could be out. You’re definitely that they could pull some, but probably only if the guys are graduating.

So these guys come up with 95, but I've seen 2 other mentions of 90 and I came up with 90 myself. The difference is they added 5 walkons. Are they really on scholly?

I’m guessing the 5 are:
Griffith, Burrows, Price, Parrott, and Clay James?

We can only really go by what the school releases because we don’t know exactly who is on scholarship officially unless they tell us. Like they could quietly not renew one pretty easily if no one leaks it. I don’t think they would though, so as far as we know those 5 are all on scholly.

Sooo.......

Could a line up a NIL sponsor to pay kids scholarships so they could be counted as walk ons?

Wonder if thats legal? At some point the NCAA will have to make a stand. They had to let the amateurism go, because the jurisprudence on individual compensation was not favorable. Tinkering with the basic regulatory foundations of college football, by letting some schools fund more scholarships than other schools—which is what it would be—is more likely to be fought by the NCAA.

BYU just had somebody sponsor all their walk-ons. It really is a great idea.

We are gonna have to cut the deadweight. Nobody promised them 5 or 6 years of scholarships
