CaneHunt ’14: Offensive Guards (OG) /Centers (C) Board

Miami will offer scholarships to approximately 170-200 prospects every year. Each school has a BIG Board and position boards, which list prospects by their priorities. Our “CaneHunt” boards are our attempt to “guess” the Hurricanes’ recruiting priorities. These boards can and probably will change throughout the recruiting cycle. Check back often during the year to check on the boards and get the latest updates on prospects. I hope you enjoy CaneHunt ’14.

Miami’s Need: 2-3

The Canes have five guards and centers currently on the roster, with only Alex Gall possibly joining that group this summer. Two (Linder & Wheeler) will be seniors this season. Look for Miami to take as many as three guards/centers in this class.

UPDATES:

2/26/13: Cory Martinez is a quality offensive guard from the Tampa area with a rating of 90 and ranked the #15 OG in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Cory has good body mass already. He’s very athletic and flexible for a young man his size and possesses excellent footwork. While his arm length will keep him at guard at the college level, he has a very good understanding of the game and his position. He may even play center in the future. The Canes really like Martinez and will push hard to land him. He has no favorites at this time. It appears our competition will come from Notre Dame, FSU, UF and USF. It’s a long way to NSD.

Updates:

2/26/13: Sam Mustipher is a quality guard prospect from Maryland, with a rating of 92 and ranked the #11 OG in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

In an ITU article, Sam had many things nice to say about Miami. Sam’s dad grew up in Miami watching the Canes, so he’s got a connection to UM. Mutipher visited UM last summer. He says that Miami’s tradition is unmatched and that their offer is a “big deal.” He wants to maintain contact with the Canes’ coaching staff (Coach Kehoe) through the process. He plans to visit family again this summer and would like to visit UF, FSU and Miami during that trip.

Our competition at this point appears to be Notre Dam and Ohio State, with Michigan in the mix. It’s a long way to NSD.

UPDATES:

2/26/13: Quenton Nelson is a quality guard prospect from New Jersey, with a rating of 89 and ranked the #15 OG in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Ohio State has the early lead for Nelson. However, Queston is taking a systematic approach to his recruiting. With 24 offers already, Quenton is planning to narrow down his list this spring and take unofficial visits this summer to Stanford, Northwestern, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke and probably Miami. The Cane must get him to campus to stand a chance of signing him. Coach Golden and his staff have excellent connection in New Jersey and want to keep our pipeline open this year. It’s a long way to NSD.
