In he midst of an ongoing NCAA investigation, Miami continues to bring in top-level talent. Today’s commitment of Miami Northwestern DB Artie Burns was a big one for Golden and staff for a few reasons.
On the field, Burns is an elite athlete. He is the fastest player on the field in every game and has great size at 6’1, 185. He can play at either corner or safety, but will most likely play safety at Miami. He has good range and long arms as well. He isn’t necessarily a true safety, but has all the tools to develop into one with the coaching at Miami. Burns was formerly committed to Alabama and plans to run track in college.
The other huge impact with this commitment is the Canes getting back in the fold at Northwestern. This has been a hotly debated topic since the 2008 class had its problems at Miami and the Canes seemingly lost touch with the prospects at the school within the last few years, most notably losing out on Teddy Bridgewater, Eli Rogers, and Amari Cooper. With new Head Coach Stephen Field at the helm, this could be the start of a new era between UM and MNW, which is a great sign considering the amount of talent that comes out of there every year.
This now sets the table for Southridge Safety Jamal Carter, who is also expected to be choosing this week for Miami. The addition of two 4-star prospects right on the heels of the newest allegations shows that the staff can recruit with the best of them, under any circumstances.
